Best Phone Call Ever

I just got off the phone with "Leslie" who called me to let me know that she had spoken to our Payroll Lady and that we are not unemployed thanks to our union contract. Apparently there is a section in our contract that states that the staff will continue to be paid if the library is closed due to an act of mother nature (I don't know exactly what it says because my copy of my union contract is in my house somewhere). I cannot tell you how happy I am. I'm so ecstatic that I have a job and that I'm still getting paid.

  1. Oh gosh, I was so worried about you! I heard about the fires and recognized your street. I'm so relieved your house wasn't one of them and that you and your family are ok. It is devastating looking at those photos. I don't even know what to say. So many places that were such staples of our lives, gone.

Our house only had about a foot or so of water in it, but everything on the first floor is pretty much ruined as a result. We're not sure yet if insurance is going to cover the appliances and the rest of the damage.

Do you know what happened to my branch library? Our poor roof leaked on a regular rainy day. Please let me know if there's anything I can do or send to you.

    1. I know, I can't believe the things that are gone.

Considering, a foot isn't that bad. It sucks that it got into your first floor. I'm sure the insurance will. Did they apply for the FEMA Disaster Assistance?

I'm not actually sure what happened to your branch. I tried to look at it as I was driving past it the other day and it looks like it got water inside. PLO definitely wasn't hit as badly as LB.

      Thanks!

    2. Well, it turns out it was more than a foot, but we're still not sure exactly how much more since my in laws are trying not to worry us so they're being pretty cagey about it (which is just worrying us MORE).

Today's updates were that everything on the first floor was destroyed. Washer, dryer, fridge, stove, hot water heater, baseboard heat, central air unit, new hardwood floors, tile floors, everything.

The garage was trashed and insurance is totaling the car. Flood insurance, which we've been paying for for years, isn't covering anything except "maybe" the walls, which need to be gutted and redone. I can't even focus on how many tens of thousands of dollars this is going to cost. There were a few sentimental items that I'm pretty upset to have lost. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I wish I was there.

They've filed with FEMA, but FEMA said they're not going to cover much if anything either. I don't know why. I hope you're being covered more!

Oh no, I'm sad to hear water got inside my branch! I know the area does seem to be mostly ok though, at least compared to LB. LB is devastated. I'm still in so much shock about all of this.

    3. Awww shit :-(

I'm not exactly sure what the flood insurance is covering.

I don't understand why FEMA isn't helping with much. I don't know exactly what they are covering for us but according to my father they'd been really helpful.

I know how you feel about the sentimental items. The last box we pulled out of our crawl space was full of my grandmother's stuff and I just started to cry when I saw it all.

PLO didn't seem too bad when I drove around. LB looks like a war zone. It's crazy.

    4. It does look like a war zone! Everyone I've spoken to has used the same word to describe it.

Well, FEMA may not be helping us much with money, but they sure did save our butts today! Yesterday a crew was working on the natural gas lines to our house and apparently they cracked the lines, which started leaking gas in and around our house. A guy from FEMA stopped by today and noticed that it smelled like gas. Lucky thing! Our whole house could have exploded.

Oh gosh, was the box of your grandmother's stuff ok?

    5. It's the only way to describe it.

Thank God for the FEMA dude! I'm so glad he noticed and your family is okay!

Eh. Some stuff was destroyed and I saved what I could.

  2. Oh, is the nice youth services librarian ok? I know she recently moved to the first floor of her building. I don't remember your code name for her :P The nice one in my branch is ok, but her house had a lot of water in it (she lives in the canals). She's staying with someone out of state for now. I haven't heard anything about The Other One in my branch. Do you know anything about how the page in my branch is doing?

    1. Oh, "Department Head" she lost everything in her apartment. Thankfully she wasn't there so she didn't lose her car.

I can find out from Erin about The Other One. She would know because her cousin is good friend's with her son.

The new Page is doing really well. She is super cute.

    2. Oh no! Please pass on my hugs to Department Head (and of course I'm sending you virtual hugs too!). Is her cat ok? I feel so bad. She was so happy to have been able to snag a first floor apartment :(

Ah, yeah, if you do speak with Erin I'd be interested in how The Other One is doing, though she's probably fine in PL.

Yay for the new page! I'm so glad she's doing ok. She's so sweet. Thanks for all the updates! I hope your family recovers from this. I'd say "soon" but I know recovery isn't going to happen quickly. If there's anything I can do or send you, please let me know :)

    3. When I see her I will (Unfortunately I don't know when that will be).

Knowing her she totally took Tess with her (She had an emergency bag for her). I know she is currently staying with a friend in Baldwin.

I know! She was so happy not climbing up all those steps like in her upstairs apartment.

New Page is super sweet. I'm sad you aren't there when I go to do story time but I'm happy you were at least replaced by someone equally as awesome.

No problem! I'm glad I can keep you up-to-date with everything going on.

Thanks! I feel like recovery is going to take forever, but we've all been trying to pretend to be normal.

    4. Aw, I miss you too! I spoke with New Page today and she said she's doing ok. Her house wasn't damaged but she said our branch was flooded! :( I hope the books are ok.

My blog readers have offered to donate books to help rebuild our branches, so whenever things get back up and running again let me know and I'll pass the info on.

    5. I took some pictures of your branch today when I walked past it. I'll e-mail them to you.

That is amazing. Anything would be greatly appreciated! I'll keep you up-to-date on what's going on in the building.
