Overdue Archives: Mini Vacation Upstate, NY

A couple of weeks back Justin and I took a little road trip in the Tesla* to a little Airbnb on Silverlake in Perry, New York for a few days to kind of make up for the fact that we didn't get to go to Central Europe for two and a half weeks like we had planned before COVID. Our trip didn't go as planned for reasons I can't mention just yet but Justin and I made the best of it.

We were originally supposed to leave Long Island at 7:00am but didn't end up hitting the road until almost 6:00pm because of various reason. So what was supposed to be a scenic daytime drive Upstate turned into a nighttime drive where I was constantly asking Justin how he was doing until we got to our Airbnb at 1:30am.

We woke up at a decent hour considering how late we got in then proceeded to shower and check out the property before we decided to drive to the Wegmans in Geneseo, NY to pick up some supplies for our stay.

On our way back to the Airbnb we stopped for lunch outside at Gatherings At The Depot and then did a little antiquing at 2nd Time Around Consignment

After picking up a few items we headed back to the property to enjoy some time by the lake. Unfortunately we both forgot it got cold Upstate earlier than it does on Long Island, so all of our kayaking and fishing dreams did not come true. Justin offered to take me antiquing and we drove to Mount Morris to visit the multiple shops on Main Street including; Allegiance AntiquesCarvings & MoreFinders Keepers, and another shop that I will not name because they treated Justin and I badly when we went to pay.

Eventually we headed back, stopping for fire wood on the way, set up the firepit for the evening and headed to Hole In The Wall for our first dinner inside of a restaurant since March.

When we got back Justin tried to get a fire going and for some reason the wood we bought would not catch despite all of his efforts (And he can build one hell of a fire normally). So we said screw it, went inside and watched Away (2020 - Present) on Netflix until we got tired.

Initially we were planning on visiting Letchworth State Park but unfortunately we were unable to go but we did decide to drive up about an hour to Buffalo.

While in Buffalo we stopped by Lloyd Taco Factory to grab lunch that we ate in the car. While we were eating we were discussing what we should do. We tossed around going to The Buffalo Zoo (Which is the third oldest zoo in the United States), eating buffalo wings at Anchor Bar, visiting Forest Lawn Cemetery where Rick James is buried, checking out the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, etc. Eventually we just decided to drive another twenty or so minutes to visit Niagara Falls State Park.

While at the park we took a ride on the Maid of the Mist because why not? It was a nice, moist little boat trip and I'm happy we did it because I didn't get to see the falls from a boat when I went to Niagara Falls as a child.

After chilling at the park for a bit we decided to drive back. Once we were back we went to Silver Lake Brewing Project so Justin could have a flight and we could discuss what we were going to do for dinner. Eventually we picked a spot for dinner, ate and then unsuccessfully went in search of Duraflame logs to try and build a fire by the lake.

Since there was no fire to be had, we just decided to go to sleep.

We got up relatively early to pack our things, do a light cleaning of the property and head back to Long Island. On the way back home we decided to stop by the Corning Museum of Glass, which was incredible and I highly recommend visiting if you're in the area.

Once we were done at the museum we drove the five or so hours back home.

Despite not being the trip that I planned, it was very enjoyable and I'm glad that we got to get away for a few days with everything that's been going on.

  1. I am lucky enough to live 20 minutes away from the Corning Museum of Glass. I try to visit at least twice a year.
