I Haven't Worked In Exactly A Month...

I cannot believe that as of today it has been exactly a month since the last time I went to work. You'd think I'd be enjoying not going to work but I really don't. I'm all sorts of bored to the point where I'm constantly looking for something to do around Justin's place (His apartment had NEVER been this clean) as I sit around waiting to hear something about my job and when I can go back to work.

I was once told by an unemployed friend that after a week or so of sleeping in late it gets old and you really want/need something to do because it gets boring really quickly, which I didn't believe when they told me but they were completely right. Sleeping in and watching daytime television is getting boring.

I mean, I've been running around and doing various things for my family whenever they ask me to but having to do randomness has become less and less as our house has been cleanedish and is being fixed. We have electricity, running/hot water, etc. The only thing we don't have yet is heat because my parents had to order a new boiler and that is thankfully going to be installed tomorrow. Once we get that in we can all technically move back in because our bedrooms weren't damaged during the storm, but the house still have a lovely odor thanks to all flood/sewer water that molded our den.

But yeah, it's crazy to think that it's almost been a month since Hurricane Sandy hit and ruined everything. And that my library still isn't open.

AM Phone Calls...

Can we talk about how today is the one day since the hurricane hit that I've slept in and my Director calls me and wakes me up. I answered all groggy and he was like "Really Ms. _______ you're still asleep?!" Ugh!

The only good thing about him waking me up is that I now know that the school finally filed for mitigation and the clean up on the actual building can finally begin. I mean, I still don't know when I'll get to go back to work but things are at least looking up.

Inside The Library...

Yesterday Erin and I decided that we were gonna go wandering around town because we honestly didn't have anything better to do.While doing so I told her that I wanted to stop by the library to try and look through the windows, so we headed over to see if we could get a peak of anything.

When we got there we found a clean up crew in masks and official-ish looking white coats. I wasn't going to say anything to them but Erin urged me to and we ended up speaking with the guy in charge. He told us about what they were currently doing in the building and he asked me if there was anything that I wanted to get from my desk or anywhere else in the library. I told him that I actually had a laptop at my desk and he ran to get Erin & I masks and he let us in the building. He walked us upstairs to my department and talked to us as I grabbed my stuff and for a while after. We found out that his name was Justin and he came all the way from Michigan to head this clean up crew.

After giving him a bunch of restaurant suggestions we asked him if he minded if we walked through the building and took some pictures. He said he didn't have a problem with that, so Erin and I walked around downstairs to survey the damage.

I know it doesn't look terrible inside but all of the books on the bottom two shelves were destroyed, the computers are all shot, the carpet needs to be ripped out, the paint was ruined, etc. Oh, and it doesn't smell so hot in there (Unfortunately it's a smell that I've been getting used to because it's similar to what my house smells like when we open the down to the den). 

One of the biggest problems, which I mentioned in a previous post, is the fact that the school district technically owns the building. Nothing can be done to the building unless the school district files for it. So the crew that is currently in our building can only deal with the books, shelves, etc. because the library owns that stuff. It's so stupid.

While we were still upstairs Justin showed us exactly what they were doing with the good books. He said that they were taking all of books that didn't get damaged, boxing them up before they got in contact with the mold on the other books and placing them in some logical order by shelf & row in the auditorium.

So that is all I know. I'm glad I got to go inside and see what was going on but I don't know when the building will be fixed and when I can go back to work.

Facebook Update From My Director...

I just noticed that my Director updated his Facebook status a few hours ago and apparently there is still no word on when the library will be up and running again.

He wrote...

"Unfortunately there is no change in the status of the Library. Since the main building is a school district building only they can contract for the mitigation. We are hoping that will be soon."

I can't even explain to you how much this sucks.We are technically a school district building but we get no benefit from it what-so-ever. God knows when they'll get in touch with the proper channels to get the library the help it needs to open back up.

Mini Rant: Closing The Library Because Of Sandy...

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love my library and I love my Director but not when it comes to weather related issues. The area where I live and work was put under mandatory evacuation and it took hours after the announcement was made for someone to get in contact with me to give the official word that the library would be close tomorrow. I mean seeing as there was a mandatory evacuation it was kind of a no brainer that we wouldn't open, but c'mon we should have been informed hours before we actually were because people need to make arrangements. It was just so irritating to me. I mean I know I should be happy that I'm somewhere safe and that I don't have to worry about traveling in that weather tomorrow, but there was no reason for them to take so long to contact the staff.

Snow Day...

As I said yesterday the library was closed today because of the blizzard that has raped the tri-state area -- Not that it mattered because I'm off almost all week. So today Erin, Phil and I took pictures in the snow, walked to a local diner for lunch, drank hot chocolate with booze and watched Clue (1985). It was a nice snow day, but it was a pain in the ass to walk around because it was so windy out.

Snowy Sunday...

Despite there being a blizzard outside today I had to go to work. And what did I do at work? Nothing because all of five people came in and they just came in for DVDs, so they didn't even ask my Department Head or I anything. We did get to close all of 45 minutes early. Going into work was a total waste of my time today.

I did get a phone call from the wrong side of the phone chain about the library being closed tomorrow -- I used to be a Clerk so on the old list I'm on the clerical side, but I haven't been a Clerk for a while and they put out a new list last week. I had to tell the person calling me that I wasn't on their list so I had no idea who was next and she'd have to call someone else.
