Pretending To Be A Mom...

Today I overheard a super awkward and sad conversation between "Julia" and "Emily" as I was in the office doing work. "Emily" was sitting at the reference desk minding her own business when "Julia" walks up and starts telling her that tomorrow is Mom's Night Out and how she was going to go to a Mom's Night Out event at a local mall with one of her friends even though she herself isn't a mom. She was telling "Emily" how there would be little free makeover, etc. and that she was going to take advantage of it.

When "Emily" asked what she'd say if anyone was to ask about her kids she replied "Ohh, I'm going to tell them I have two kids and that their names are Insert Her Cats' Names Here." Because "Emily" is too nice she just told "Julia" that she hopes she has a nice time.

I personally couldn't believe what I was hearing and told "Amy" -- She didn't hear what was going on because she was too busy jabbering on her phone to one of her family members. "Amy" who is a mother, was appalled by what I had told her. For the rest of the afternoon she'd just look at me and say "That woman is such a sad person..."

The whole thing was just bizarre. Do any of you guys work with characters like "Julia"??

NOTE: "Julia" is a 50+ spinster who lives in an old couple's basement with her two cats.

  1. Hmm, my only thought is that Julia really wants kids and has been trying to have kids for a long time. So she is trying to stay lighthearted about the situation?? Otherwise, that is sad. :-/ I feel sad for "Julia".

  2. That's weird. Now it makes me think to not trust any moms I see at moms' outings unless I see pics of their kids or at least some stretch marks hahaha.

Never in my life before this afternoon would I have thought anything of women I see at a mothers event, but now I know to think twice.

  3. I agree with Amy, Julia is a sad sad person. I work with someone who talks too much most of the time, but she's not as crazy as Julia.
