"Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls (and Everything in Between)" by Lauren Graham

In this collection of personal essays, the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood reveals stories about life, love, and working as a woman in Hollywood—along with behind-the-scenes dispatches from the set of the new Gilmore Girls, where she plays the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore once again.

In Talking as Fast as I Can, Lauren Graham hits pause for a moment and looks back on her life, sharing laugh-out-loud stories about growing up, starting out as an actress, and, years later, sitting in her trailer on the Parenthood set and asking herself, “Did you, um, make it?” She opens up about the challenges of being single in Hollywood (“Strangers were worried about me; that’s how long I was single!”), the time she was asked to audition her butt for a role, and her experience being a judge on Project Runway (“It’s like I had a fashion-induced blackout”).

In “What It Was Like, Part One,” Graham sits down for an epic Gilmore Girls marathon and reflects on being cast as the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore. The essay “What It Was Like, Part Two” reveals how it felt to pick up the role again nine years later, and what doing so has meant to her.

Some more things you will learn about Lauren: She once tried to go vegan just to bond with Ellen DeGeneres, she’s aware that meeting guys at awards shows has its pitfalls (“If you’re meeting someone for the first time after three hours of hair, makeup, and styling, you’ve already set the bar too high”), and she’s a card-carrying REI shopper (“My bungee cords now earn points!”).

Including photos and excerpts from the diary Graham kept during the filming of the recent Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, this book is like a cozy night in, catching up with your best friend, laughing and swapping stories, and—of course—talking as fast as you can.

"Everything I Want to Eat: Sqirl and the New California Cooking Hardcover" by Jessica Koslow & Maria Zizka

Jessica Koslow and her restaurant, Sqirl, are at the forefront of the California cooking renaissance, which is all about food that surprises us and engages all of our senses—it looks good, tastes vibrant, and feels fortifying yet refreshing. In Everything I Want to Eat, Koslow shares 100 of her favorite recipes for health-conscious but delicious dishes, all of which always use real foods—no fake meat or fake sugar here—that also happen to be suitable for vegetarians, vegans, or whomever you’re sharing your meal with.

The book is organized into seven chapters, each featuring a collection of recipes centered on a key ingredient or theme. Expect to find recipes for dishes Sqirl has become known for, as well as brand-new seasonal flavor combinations, including:
  • Raspberry and cardamom jam
  • Sorrel-pesto rice bowl
  • Burnt brioche toast with house ricotta and seasonal jam
  • Lamb merguez, cranberry beans, roasted tomato, and yogurt cheese
  • Valrhona chocolate fleur de sel cookies
  • Almond hazelnut milk
Koslow lives in LA, where everyone is known to be obsessively health-conscious and where dietary restrictions are the norm. People come into Sqirl and order dishes with all sorts of substitutions and modifications—hold the feta, please, add extra kale. They are looking to make their own healthy adventures. Others may tack breakfast sausage, cured bacon, or Olli’s prosciutto on to their order. So Koslow has had to constantly think about ways to modify dishes for certain diets, which in a way has made her a better, more adaptable cook.

Throughout this book, Koslow provides notes and thought bubbles that show how just about any dish can be modified for specific tastes and dietary needs, whether it needs to be gluten-free or vegan.

Everything I Want to Eat captures the excitement of the food at Sqirl—think of a classic grilled cheese turned playful with the addition of tomato coriander jam—while also offering accessible recipes, like blood orange upside-down cake, that can be easily made in the home kitchen. Moreover, it’s an entirely new kind of cookbook and approach to how we are all starting to think about food, allowing readers to play with the recipes, combining and shaping them to be nothing short of everything you want to eat.

So the last time I did one of these I was trying to get my hands on the audio book version of "Washington: A Life" by Ron Chernow, which I still haven't gotten. And because I couldn't get it then, I started reading "The Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo" by Amy Schumer because Nicole recommended it to me.

Before I started "The Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo" I didn't know how I'd feel about it because at that point I had never actually watched any of Amy Schumer's comedy, so I kinda went into the book blind. But that being said, I totally enjoyed the book. There were a lot of references to areas of Long Island I know very well, which is probably one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much.

But I enjoyed it, it was a quick and fun read.

Are you reading anything good? Lemme know!

From The Hold Shelf (Or What I'm About To Read)...

As I was taking a picture of "The Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo" by Amy Schumer for Instagram yesterday I realized that I haven't done a From The Hold Shelf post since March. So I decided I needed to get on that and share what I'm reading/listening to with you guys...
•   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •   •

"Washington: A Life" by Ron Chernow
Celebrated biographer Ron Chernow provides a richly nuanced portrait of the father of our nation and the first president of the United States. With a breadth and depth matched by no other one volume biography of George Washington, this crisply paced narrative carries the reader through his adventurous early years, his heroic exploits with the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, his presiding over the Constitutional Convention, and his magnificent performance as America's first president. In this groundbreaking work, based on massive research, Chernow shatters forever the stereotype of George Washington as a stolid, unemotional figure and brings to vivid life a dashing, passionate man of fiery opinions and many moods.

The Emmy Award-winning comedian, actress, writer, and star of Inside Amy Schumer and the acclaimed film Trainwreck has taken the entertainment world by storm with her winning blend of smart, satirical humor. Now, Amy Schumer has written a refreshingly candid and uproariously funny collection of (extremely) personal and observational essays.

In The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo, Amy mines her past for stories about her teenage years, her family, relationships, and sex and shares the experiences that have shaped who she is—a woman with the courage to bare her soul to stand up for what she believes in, all while making us laugh.

Ranging from the raucous to the romantic, the heartfelt to the harrowing, this highly entertaining and universally appealing collection is the literary equivalent of a night out with your best friend—an unforgettable and fun adventure that you wish could last forever. Whether she’s experiencing lust-at-first-sight while in the airport security line, sharing her own views on love and marriage, admitting to being an introvert, or discovering her cross-fit instructor’s secret bad habit, Amy Schumer proves to be a bighearted, brave, and thoughtful storyteller that will leave you nodding your head in recognition, laughing out loud, and sobbing uncontrollably—but only because it’s over.

Because I couldn't get my hands on a copy of "Alexander Hamilton" by Ron Chernow (Justin has a copy of it on his Kindle but I refuse to use an e-reader) I started listening to Chernow's "Washington: A Life" because Adam Savage was talking so highly of it on an episode of his podcast Still Untitled. And I must agree with Adam, it is an excellent biography and I was only up to chapter nineteen when my hold expired (I had it downloaded on Overdrive and now I have to wait to get it again). So as soon as I get my hands on another copy and finish it, I'll let you know how I feel about the rest of it.

Now because I can't finish that book I'm going to start Amy Schumer's "The Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo" which Nicole told me is funny as hell. We shall see...

Are you reading anything good, bad or meh right now? I'd love to know what you're reading.

"Forgotten Bookmarks: A Bookseller's Collection of Odd Things Lost Between the Pages" by Michael Popek
It's happened to all of us: we're reading a book, something interrupts us, and we grab the closest thing at hand to mark our spot. It could be a train ticket, a letter, an advertisement, a photograph, or a four-leaf clover. Eventually the book finds its way into the world-a library, a flea market, other people's bookshelves, or to a used bookstore. But what becomes of those forgotten bookmarks? What stories could they tell?

By day, Michael Popek works in his family's used bookstore. By night, he's the voyeuristic force behind www.forgottenbookmarks.com, where he shares the weird objects he has found among the stacks at his store.

Forgotten Bookmarks is a scrapbook of Popek's most interesting finds. Sure, there are actual bookmarks, but there are also pictures and ticket stubs, old recipes and notes, valentines, unsent letters, four-leaf clovers, and various sordid, heartbreaking, and bizarre keepsakes. Together this collection of lost treasures offers a glimpse into other readers' lives that they never intended for us to see.

They barely know each other’s last names when they agree to set out on a risky travel experiment spanning eight countries and three weeks. The catch? No hotel reservations, no plans, and best of all, no baggage.

Clara’s story will resonate with adventurers and homebodies alike—it’s at once a romance, a travelogue, and a bright modern take on the age-old questions: How do you find the courage to explore beyond your comfort zone? Can you love someone without the need for labels and commitment? Is it possible to truly leave your baggage behind?

I absolutely loved "Abandoned NYC" by Will Ellis and thoroughly enjoyed learning about places I never knew existed and more abut places I have visited myself throughout my little adventures. Because of this book Phil and I have a handful of adventures planned for this summer.

It is a beautiful guide to tons of abandon locations in the New York City area. And if you love that sort of thing, you will love this book.

I unfortunately didn't get around to reading "The Doodle Revolution: Unlock the Power to Think Differently" by Sunni Brown before it needed to be sent back to it's library but I will check it out again at some point because I really wanted to read it. "Food Truck Road Trip" by Kim Pham & Philip Shen I skimmed through. Meh.

"Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative" by Austin Kleon
You don’t need to be a genius, you just need to be yourself. That’s the message from Austin Kleon, a young writer and artist who knows that creativity is everywhere, creativity is for everyone. A manifesto for the digital age, Steal Like an Artist is a guide whose positive message, graphic look and illustrations, exercises, and examples will put readers directly in touch with their artistic side.

When Mr. Kleon was asked to address college students in upstate New York, he shaped his speech around the ten things he wished someone had told him when he was starting out. The talk went viral, and its author dug deeper into his own ideas to create Steal Like an Artist, the book. The result is inspiring, hip, original, practical, and entertaining. And filled with new truths about creativity: Nothing is original, so embrace influence, col- lect ideas, and remix and re-imagine to discover your own path. Follow your interests wherever they take you. Stay smart, stay out of debt, and risk being boring—the creative you will need to make room to be wild and daring in your imagination.

I haven't actually had a chance to read through "The Doodle Revolution: Unlock the Power to Think Differently" by Sunni Brown or "Food Truck Road Trip" by Kim Pham & Philip Shen because I've been busy reading management books for my class. But I promise by the next time I post one of these I'll have gotten to them.

"The Doodle Revolution: Unlock the Power to Think Differently" by Sunni Brown
A fearless guide to awakening your mind using simple visual language. What do Einstein, Edison, Richard Feynman, Henry Ford, and JFK have in common? Like virtually all heavy-hitting thinkers, they looked beyond just words and numbers to get intellectual and creative insights. They actively applied a deceptively simple tool to think both smarter and faster: the doodle. And so can the rest of us-zero artistic talent required. Visual thinking expert Sunni Brown has created The Doodle Revolution as a kick-starter guide for igniting and applying simple visual language to any challenge. The instinctive and universal act of doodling need only be unleashed in order to innovate, solve problems, and elevate cognitive performance instantly.

The last two books I mentioned were "The Banh Mi Handbook: Recipes for Crazy-Delicious Vietnamese Sandwiches" by Andrea Nguyen and "Banh Mi: 75 Banh Mi Recipes for Authentic and Delicious Vietnamese Sandwiches" by Jacqueline Pham and I really enjoyed both of them. I got some excellent ideas for making my own banh mis at home and my friend's really liked them when I made them.

As expected, "In The Kitchen With Kris: A Kollection of Kardashian-Jenner Family Favorites" by Kris Jenner was nothing special. It was a hodgepodge of random recipes with a few old photos of the Kardashian-Jenner family (Less pictures than I honestly expected from Kris Jenner). The only recipe that I was slightly interested in was CiCi's Cheese Borags, but not enough to take a picture of the page. So yeah, the book was just meh.

Honestly I haven't read "The Hands-Off Manager: How to Mentor People & Allow Them to Be Successful" by Steve Chandler because I'm not up to that part of my course yet, but do you guys really care how I feel about a book for my class? I mean, if you do leave me a comment and I'll let you know how I feel about it once I've read it. I know the only person who was interested in how I felt was Erin because she is interested in all of the management stuff I'm about to learn about.

"The Hands-Off Manager: How to Mentor People & Allow Them to Be Successful" by Steve Chandler
The number one reason cited in exit interviews for an employee quitting is "my manager." Most managers and executives not only aren't aware of this obvious problem, but probably wouldn't know what to do about it if they did.

Today's employees do not respond to the old hands-on, militaristic management styles. They are highly independent, individual professionals with their own fully developed ideas. Leaders and managers who try to micro-manage them will inevitably confront wide-spread disgruntlement, absenteeism, and turnover...and increase their own and their employees' stress levels.

In The Hands-Off Manager, Chandler and Black offer a new vision for all managers. With stories, examples, and vibrant activities for the reader to practice, this book shows any manager--new or seasoned--how to coach and mentor employees rather than hover over their shoulders and goad them into action. In this system, each employee's strengths are honored and honed in a climate of partnership and mutual goal-setting.

Twelve O'Clock High (1949)
This gritty World War II action drama staring Gregory Peck, Oscar winner Dean Jagger, Hugh Marlowe, Gary Merrill and Millard Mitchell is seen as one of the most realistic portrayals of the heroics and perils of war. Convinced an air force commander (Gary Merrill) is at the breaking point, Brigadier General Savage (Peck) takes over his struggling bomber group. Kind and understanding, he adopts a crushing discipline to revitalize the demoralized troop. At first resentful and rebellious, the flyers gradually change as Savage guides them to amazing feats. But the stress of command soon takes it's toll and the weary general reaches his own breaking point.

I didn't get to go through all of the books from the last edition of this but I did read through some. The "Dominique Ansel: The Secret Recipes" by Dominique Ansel book was just okay. Yes, it has the recipe for Cronuts which was one of the recipes that I really wanted to take a look at but it takes three flippin' days to make. "Bouchon Bakery" by Thomas Keller & Sebastien Rouxelwas another one that was just okay. Nothing really in it that I felt like trying to make. "Sugar Rush" by Johnny Iuzzini wasn't a winner for me either. Typically I pick up a cookbook and want to make something and I struck out with all three of these.

I haven't finished "Influence" by Mary-Kate Olsen & Ashley Olsen but I have enjoyed the interviews that I've read as of thus far and this that it is a very interesting read.

"Bouchon Bakery" by Thomas Keller & Sebastien Rouxel
Baked goods that are marvels of ingenuity and simplicity from the famed Bouchon Bakery.

The tastes of childhood have always been a touchstone for Thomas Keller, and in this dazzling amalgam of American and French baked goods, you'll find recipes for the beloved TKOs and Oh Ohs (Keller's takes on Oreos and Hostess's Ho Hos) and all the French classics he fell in love with as a young chef apprenticing in Paris: the baguettes, the macarons, the mille-feuilles, the tartes aux fruits.

Co-author Sebastien Rouxel, executive pastry chef for the Thomas Keller Restaurant Group, has spent years refining techniques through trial and error, and every page offers a new lesson: a trick that assures uniformity, a subtlety that makes for a professional finish, a flash of brilliance that heightens flavor and enhances texture. "Sunday Suppers: Recipes + Gatherings" by Karen Mordechai

For those who yearn to connect around the table, Karen’s simple, seasonally driven recipes, evocative photography, and understated styling form a road map to creating community in their own kitchens and in offbeat locations. This collection of gatherings will inspire a sense of adventure and community for both the novice and experienced cook alike.

"Bread Revolution" by Peter Reinhart
Renowned baking author and instructor Peter Reinhart has always been on the forefront of the bread movement—from his seminal work, The Bread Baker’s Apprentice, to today. In Bread Revolution, he explores the cutting-edge developments in bread baking, with fifty recipes and formulas that use sprouted flours, whole and ancient grains, nut and seed flours, alternative flours (such as teff and grape skin), and allergy-friendly and gluten-free approaches.

A new generation of bakers and millers are developing innovative flours and baking techniques that are designed to extract the grain’s full flavor potential—what Reinhart calls “the baker’s mission.” In this lushly photographed primer, Reinhart draws inspiration from these groundbreaking methods to create master recipes and formulas any home baker can follow, including Sprouted Sandwich Rye Bread, Gluten-Free Many-Seed Toasting Bread, and Sprouted Wheat Croissants.

In many instances, such as with sprouted flours, preferments aren’t necessary because so much of the flavor development occurs during the sprouting phase. For grains that benefit from soakers, bigas, and sourdough starters, Reinhart provides the precise guidance that has made him such a trusted expert in the field.

Advanced bakers will relish Reinhart’s inventive techniques and exacting scientific explanations, while beginning bakers will rejoice in his demystification of ingredients and methods—and all will come away thrilled by bread’s new frontier.

After mastering the simple method for making light-as-air meringues, anyone can make ethereal espresso marshmallows, mile-high soufflés, and chewy French macaron sandwich cookies. Readers can finally expand their cake and ice cream horizons to embrace flavors as thrilling as those in Brown Sugar-Molasses Layer Cake and Bitter Orange Ice Cream. The 250 photographs include both instructive technique shots to reassure bakers at every turn as well as stunning photographs of the ready-to-eat treats. In terms of last edition, I love love loved "How to Be Parisian Wherever You Are" by Anne Berest, Audrey Diwan, Caroline de Maigret & Sophie Mas and I read it in about an hour or so. It is a very tongue in cheek kind of book and just an overall fun read. I honestly enjoyed the book so much I am going to pick up a copy the next time I go to the book store. But that being said, I don't necessarily think that this book is everyones cup of tea. If you are seriously looking for tips on how to be Parisian you are better off booking a one way trip to Paris.
