Week In Instagram: March 25th-31st...

What I Taught My DH This Week...

Not that I've ever played in my life (I know about it because my mom grew up in Brooklyn), but I taught my Department Head about the game Skully today.

Here is all you could want to know about the game via Wikipedia...

Skully: A children's game played on the streets of New York City and other urban areas.

Sketched on the street usually in chalk, a skully board allows a game for 2 to 6 players. A sidewalk is sometimes used, offering greater protection from vehicular traffic; however, the asphalt on a typical city street is smoother and provides better game play than a bumpy cement sidewalk.

Game Play
Players use caps--usually bottle caps, or similar items like checkers, or chair glides--to play. Many players use clay or wax to weigh down their caps for easier gliding. Caps were typically plastic milk bottle caps with clay in the middle of the cap, other times candle wax is melted into them. Some players took extreme pride in their designs, thinking theirs looked or played better than other players. On hands and knees at the starting line, the first player flicks a cap poised between thumb and middle finger, and attempts to land it in the box labeled "1". If successful (the cap cannot touch a line), the player continues by flicking for the next number - and so on, in the sequence: "2", "3", "4" etc., up to "12". If any flick is unsuccessful, the player's turn is forfeit in favor of the next agreed player. When all players have had their turn, the first player resumes by flicking for the square previously missed.

Flicking a piece into a square without touching a line allows the player to immediately take another turn. In addition, if a player strikes another player's cap, he is immediately rewarded with the next box he is going for, allowing him to pick up his cap, walk over to that number, and immediately take an additional turn from there.

A complication in the game involves the space surrounding the square box "13". If, in flicking for any square (including "13"), a player accidentally lands on the area surrounding "13" (the skull), the player remains stuck there until freed by another player's shot. In one variation of the rules, such good behavior is motivated by assigning each area a number of bonus squares which advance the player who frees a stuck player. In other variations, the freeing player gets a number of bonus turns equal to the last number in the number the stuck player had reached before getting stuck.

After the player completes the circuit from "1" to "12" and successfully flicks into the square labeled "13", a circuit of the four trapezoids surrounding the "13" square must be made. The circuit of these must be performed in succession in a single turn, with the player saying "I" in the first, "Am" in the second, "A" in the third, and finally "killer" in the fourth. If all trapezoids are not negotiated in succession in a single turn, the turn is forfeit and the process must start again on the player's next turn by first flicking for the "13" square. If the trapezoids are successfully negotiated, the player is deemed to be a killer.

In another variation of the game, players must complete the circuit of numbers from "1" to "13", then backwards back to "1", before making the attempt to become a killer. This version consequently takes more time to play.

End Of Game Sequence
Once a player becomes a killer, further flicks of the bottle cap can be used to knock another competitor's bottle cap outside the six-foot square. If successful in this, the player knocked outside the square is "killed," i.e., removed from the game. In other common variations of the game, the killer needs to strike a non-killer's cap three times in succession in order to "kill" that player, or another killer's cap only once. In some variations, a non-killer can become a killer by striking the killer's cap (hit-a-killer); additionally, a killer's turn may either end or continue when he "kills" another player, based upon local convention. Also, some variations allow the killer to "walk the lines", the killer will pick up their cap and walk or jump along the lines of the board to get close to another player's cap and shoot from the closest point on the line. Some variations require the new killer to "get out of "town" (the skelly board) to the "killer line" drawn some distance away from the main skelly board. At that point, the killer flicks his top back to the skelly board at which point the killer rules are negotiated by yelling them out, the player saying them first wins: For instance "No hit a killer-be a killer", "three baby taps" or "three blasts", "all boxes are mine", etc which will govern how powerful the killer will be. Some aggressive players would typically "kill" other player's caps by not just flicking but kicking their own cap into opposing players cap's, called booting, and sending it way out of the board, sometimes damaging or losing the cap, adding further insult to the loss.

The last player on the field wins.

Dinner With Maria...

After I got off from work today I met up with Maria to go have dinner (We were actually supposed to go get coffee, but somehow it turned into pizza). We walked over to one of the local pizza places near the library and we hung out for a while. We talked about our boyfriends, boats (Her boyfriend was going to look at a boat to buy after he got off from work) and other randomness.

When we were done eating we stopped by her house to check up on her dog and then we went to one of my favorite stores to pick up a few things and then we parted ways. It was a nice few hours out with Maria. I love random get togethers.

I'll Work...

My Director did me the biggest solid tonight. So, for the past several days my Department Head has been sick and last night she called me and asked me if I could do a split shift today and work her night. I said yes and I went to a meeting in the AM and came into the actual library a little before 5:00pm tonight. When I walked in one of my coworkers tells me that "Lori" (Whom I should be working with tonight) isn't going to make it in because she has a family emergency. I was fine with this until "Julia" offered to stay with my until 7:00pm. In a panic I run into the office while she is helping a patron and call up to the Director. I begged him to not let her stay after her shift.

He comes down to the department to see what is going on. After they tell him why "Lori" couldn't make it in he asks "Emily" what time she came in (1:00pm) and then he asks "Julia" what time she came in (9:30am). He looks at "Julia" and says (After she explains to him that she has nothing to do after work tonight) that if she stays he'll have to pay her overtime if she stays and that there is no way he'll do that. So he told her to go home and let "Emily" stay until 7:30pm with me.

You don't even know how happy he made me. I guess telling your boss you'd rather die than spend the night working with someone has some impact, but sometimes I don't know with him. He could have let her stay to piss me off and that would have amused him -- He once told me he lives for fucking up my day. Thankfully he didn't feel like fucking with me tonight.

Works Of Art...

I've been trying to step up my DrawSomething game after seeing all of the pictures from Bobby's Draw Something Addiction. So here are some of my newest pieces of art...

Run For Your Lives...

Last night "Favorite Page #2" was telling me about a 5K obstacle course zombie race called Run For Your Lives. It sounds like it could be so much fun!

Is it terrible that I think doing this is great motivation for me to actual go back to the gym?

I love the idea of this so I'm gonna mention it to Lenni, Erin and a handful of others and see if they wanna do the September 1st one in Butler, Pennsylvania (Even though it's forever away).

Seven Questions...

Las Vegas 2009

1. What is your favorite color to wear?
This might sound boring but black is my favorite color to wear. I love wearing black because you can wear any accessorizes you want and I have some obnoxious accessorizes.

2. You are given the choice between visiting every country and landing on the moon. Which would you choose?
Visiting every country in the world all the way. I want my passport stamped!

3. What's your favorite animal and why?
Ducks. They are just so cute and they quack.
4. You are forced to do one of the following, which would you choose? Sky dive, scuba dive, or this:
Forced? I'd love to go scuba diving!

5. You are given the chance to go back in time. Which era would you visit?
If I could jump back when I please I'd totally take a ride on the Titanic before it hit the iceberg.

6. If you had the power to remove one thing (ie: flies, mosquitoes, junk food) from the earth for good, what would it be?

7. What is one thing you've learned from Pinterest that made you think "GENIUS"!
Etching sayings into glass bakeware so people don't end up accidentally stealing it.

Whose your favorite band/artist?
Hmm this question is as hard for me to answer as "favorite color"! I haven't had one favorite band in years but I'm gonna go with Muse because I've liked them since high school and still love em.

What was the best concert you've ever been to?
A Billy Joel concert I went to in high school.

What is your favorite song of all time?
This might be weird but I don't think I have one! I just like too many songs from too many genres that I couldn't possibly pick just one! Kind of back to the whole favorite color thing. ;)

What is your current favorite song?
Eeek well the current song I enjoy rocking out to when it comes on the radio/tv is "We Are Young" by Fun.

Do you know how to play an instrument?
I taught myself how to play a keyboard that we had for a while but that's the extent of my music ability.

Which of the following do you own? (Records, Eight Tracks, Cassette Tapes, CDs, MP3s)
All of the above! It's funny, I was just talking to my boyfriend about how people still make cds, cassettes, and records, but an 8 track player, which I have, is something you'll probably never be able to play modern music on. I guess the technology wasn't awesome enough to bring back?

What is your favorite music video?
I think Oren Lavie's "Her Morning Elegance" video is pretty awesome.

What is your guilty pleasure song?
Love me some Beyoncé :) Any of it really haha.

What is your favorite song of all time?
"A Drop in the Ocean" by Ron Pope

What is your current favorite song?
"Give Me Love" by Ed Sheeran

Do you know how to play an instrument?
HA. No. Not unless you count those plastic recorders they teach you in elementary school. But I've always wanted to learn how to play guitar.

Which of the following do you own? (Records, Eight Tracks, Cassette Tapes, CDs, MP3s)
Records, Cassette tapes, CDs and MP3s

What is your favorite music video?
Umm...Good question. I don't know if I have a favorite, but I do always enjoy whatever Taylor Swift puts out. She's so cute.

What is your guilty pleasure song?
"Dirrty" by Christina Aguilera. It's the song that never fails to make me want to get up and dance - Regardless of where I am.

{Blog} • {Twitter} • {Pinterest} • {Bloglovin'} • {Instagram}

Whose your favorite band/artist?
It is constantly changing! At the moment I am loving Canadian singer Austra and Brooklyn based synth-pop duo, Chairlift.

What was the best concert you've ever been to?
Southbound in 2008. That year the line up included Kings of Leon, Girl Talk, Gotye and many more. The stand out act for me was Groove Amada. I've never danced so hard in my life! Also, Daft Punk in 2007 were absolutely amazing!

What is your favorite song of all time?
Oh gosh this is hard... I have different favourites depending on my mood! I would have to go with a classic and say either Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" or David Bowie's "Space Oddity"

What is your current favorite song?
"Cameo Lover" by Kimbra

Do you know how to play an instrument?
Absolutely not! Although I used to take voice lessons (I wasn't that bad either!)

Which of the following do you own? (Records, Eight Tracks, Cassette Tapes, CDs, MP3s)
Currently only MP3's and CD's, but it's my dream to own a record collection!

What is your favorite music video?
"Star Guitar" by The Chemical Brothers. It's such a simple yet effective video, plus the song is pretty cool too!

What is your guilty pleasure song?
Definitely the Mariah Carey Christmas album, although I swear I only pull it out once a year!

{Blog} • {Goodreads}

Whose your favorite band/artist?
Dream Theater. Never heard of them? I know, I know. Not many people I know have, but funny enough, when I mentioned them to my 70 year old co-worker she exclaimed, “Oh, little Mikey Portnoy? I used to make him sandwiches!” That would be the drummer.

What was the best concert you've ever been to?
I’ve been to see a bunch of bands I actually like, but surprisingly one of the best shows I’ve ever seen was Britney Spears. I went with my sister and it was like going to a campy dinner theater—a harem of dancers, stories, costumes, and glitter everywhere.

What is your favorite song of all time?
Beethoven’s 5th Symphony. Really.

What is your current favorite song?
Illusive Consensus. I wish I could sing like her.

Do you know how to play an instrument?
How? Sure. Well? Ha, no.

Which of the following do you own? (Records, Eight Tracks, Cassette Tapes, CDs, MP3s)
  • RecordsI sold off all of my records about a year ago.
  • Eight TracksNever owned a single one.
  • Cassette TapesHa, yeah, I still have a few floating around. My last car only had a cassette player.
  • CDsUm, I think I still have a copy of Poison’s Greatest Hits, Guns ‘N Roses’ Appetite for Destruction, and Pink Floyd’s Pulse floating around somewhere.
  • MP3sThis makes up the bulk of my collection.
What is your favorite music video?
I’m so out of touch with music videos it’s not even funny. I’d probably have to say Guns ‘N Roses’ November Rain, which totally dates me. Yes, the cheesier the better (and you’re hard pressed to find anything cheesier than the November Rain music video!)

What is your guilty pleasure song?
I’m still stuck in the ‘90s. Iris, Shimmer, Comedown, Don’t Speak, heck, even It’s All Coming Back to Me Now (THE song to slow dance to at the school dances)—if I rocked it in middle school then I’m probably still secretly rocking it now. Most songs by hair bands of the ‘80s and ‘90s get played a lot in my car and would definitely have to qualify as guilty pleasures.

Movie: The Hunger Games...

Last night I went to see The Hunger Games (2012) with Justin, Erin, Phil and a bunch of our other friends (There was ten of us in total). I think only two of the nine other people I went to see the movie with actually knew anything about the movie and books, but the group consensus after the movie was that everyone enjoyed it.

I thought it was a good movie, but to be honest with all of you I haven't actually read any of the books in The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. Half because it never really interested me and half because I couldn't get my hand on a copy even if I wanted to (There are several hundred pending holds on the book throughout the county). That being said, I knew exactly what the movie was about and what was going to happen (I Wikipedia all books that I have no urge to read that I know patrons will ask me about) and even then I still liked it, so maybe I'll try the books. In terms of recommending the movie, I say go for.
