Call The Police...

Oh boy, I just had a frantic patron come up to me at the Youth Services Reference Desk asking me to call the police because she was just threatened by another patron downstairs in the Adult section of the library.

Apparently this lady was downstairs in the library's quiet study area and there was a person talking loudly on his phone, so she went to Adult Reference to complain because he was being rude to elderly patrons when they asked him to quiet down. Whoever was at Adult Reference didn't do anything about it and when she came back into the quiet study area the man proceeded to curse her out, calling her a snitch, threatening to shoot her, etc.

So she said she picked up her stuff and went back to Adult Reference extremely upset and she claims that again, whoever was down there was no real help but they made the man leave. As he did he threatened to have her jumped and killed.

Frustrated and scare she came up to Youth Services and asked me to call the police. I called our Director down and proceeded to call the police for her.

Our Director talked to her then went and checked to see if a man by the description given was anywhere near the building. He wasn't, so our Director talked the woman into going downstairs with him and waiting for the police officer to arrive.

After that I don't know what happened but I hope I don't have to deal with a psycho trying to shoot up the library.

What To Do...

Today I attended a meeting with one of the Clerks held by the Nassau County Police Department at Adelphi University called Active Shooter Briefing (It was about what to do if someone came into a building and started shooting up the place) and boy it was a downer.

We were bombarded with information on how to deal with various aspects of having an active shooter within a building, photos and videos from past tragedies, etc. It was all very informative but I don't think that I was the right person to send seeing as I am not a person in a position to make decisions on what our library should do in terms of having some sort of plan to deal with the issue.

Honestly the whole thing just brought back memories of being in college and worrying about what to do if there was a shooter because they showed pictures and talked a a lot about what happened at Virginia Tech. I was away at Binghamon when the Virginia Tech massacre occurred and I distinctly remember sitting around talking with my friends about what would happen if someone went crazy in our building and decided to shoot up the place. Unfortunately the answer was we'd be screwed because we lived on the third floor of a building and there was only one exit we could possibly get to. It really is just as scary to think about now as it was in April 2007.

On top of that now all I can think about is how unsafe our library is if something was to happen here because the advice of lock your doors and take cover in the back somewhere really doesn't work in our building. So I'm interested in knowing what one would do in a building like ours and what kind of plan should be put in place. I guess I'll have to wait until the follow up meeting (Which I think my Director and Assistant Director should attend) and find out.

AM Phone Calls...

Can we talk about how today is the one day since the hurricane hit that I've slept in and my Director calls me and wakes me up. I answered all groggy and he was like "Really Ms. _______ you're still asleep?!" Ugh!

The only good thing about him waking me up is that I now know that the school finally filed for mitigation and the clean up on the actual building can finally begin. I mean, I still don't know when I'll get to go back to work but things are at least looking up.

Facebook Update From My Director...

I just noticed that my Director updated his Facebook status a few hours ago and apparently there is still no word on when the library will be up and running again.

He wrote...
"Unfortunately there is no change in the status of the Library. Since the main building is a school district building only they can contract for the mitigation. We are hoping that will be soon."
I can't even explain to you how much this sucks. We are technically a school district building but we get no benefit from it what-so-ever. God knows when they'll get in touch with the proper channels to get the library the help it needs to open back up.

Sandy My Darlin' You Hurt Me Real Bad...

I don't even know how to start putting everything that has happened over the past few days into words, but I'm going to try my best because I need to talk about it. As most of you know by now, I live on Long Island. What you don't know is that Hurricane Sandy pretty much messed my hometown. I've tried throughout the course of having this blog not to talk about where I live because I work there, but today is the day that I have to talk about it. I live on the South Shore of Long Island in a city named Long Beach and Hurricane Sandy basically ruined my life, at least for the foreseeable future..

Lemme start from the beginning...

I can't claim to be one of the "brave" ones that stayed on the little barrier island I call home because I ran to Justin's on Sunday after helping my parents (While I was hungover from partying the night before) move all of the items up higher in our den so they wouldn't be destroyed (Oh, how it didn't help), but my parents and sister stayed, along with a bunch of my friends.
As soon as I got to Justin's I unpacked the supplies I had bought a head of time and the two of us headed over to the grocery store to get more stuff. While we were out shopping for supplies I got a phone call from Nicole asking me if Erin was okay because she had heard that her cousin died. I called Erin, she didn't answer. So I tried calling her house and then her mother, she answered and I told her what Nicole had said to me and asked if it was true or just some stupid rumor someone started on Facebook, unfortunately it was true. I was so upset Justin made me go to the car while he finished shopping. Once he was done we just went home and I spent the evening being upset about leaving my family, suffering from the hangover I got from partying the night before and thinking about Erin's family's loss.

The next morning I woke up and we all just hung around waiting for the storm to hit. It all seemed fine and dandy and then around 6:00pm we lost power -- Which was due to the neighbor's tree falling on the power line. We started a fire, lit a bunch of candles and proceeded to play games throughout the course of the evening. We also had to listen to Justin's youngest sister cry about being scared and wanting daddy.

Around 11:00pm during the storm, just as we were about to go to bed, Justin got a phone call from my mother. She was calling me to warn me that there were two house on fire on our block and not to get worried if people started posting stuff about a fire on Facebook or whatnot. I wasn't worried so I said good night to her.

When I woke up Tuesday morning I turned my phone back on so that we'd have a line of communication open since Justin had to go to work (His job had power). As soon as it connected I was inundated with text messages from my cousins, friends, etc. The one that got to me the most was from my cousin Lisa telling me that she had heard from my sister over an hour after I did the night before and that two house fire had spread to a six house fire and she was worried about my sister and parents.

This caused me to flip out. I wanted to leave and drive home but Justin's mother and aunt wouldn't let me, so I ended up sitting around all day trying to get in touch with my parents and sister.

Justin's mother and aunt insisted that we find something to occupy our time with seeing as the girls were getting bored. We found out that the local shopping center had power so we went and picked up some more groceries and Justin's aunt took us all for manicures and pedicures. While we were at the nail salon I found an available electrical outlet and charged my phone, texted everyone I could think of trying to figure out where my family was, checking the Facebook page someone had made pertaining to our city and the hurricane, tweeting to various people about their whereabouts, etc. It wasn't a very relaxing outing for me. Especially since they had the radio on the news and they kept bringing up things about where I live. The only good thing that happened was that Erin texted me telling me she was going to go check on my family, but I didn't get another text from her for hours after this one.

A few hours passed, I was annoyed and insisted on being left alone in the dark in Justin's apartment and I eventually (Almost fifteen hours later) got a phone call from my mother and sister telling me that they were okay and that they had been trying to get in touch with me all day long but there was barely any service. I cannot tell you how happy I was to hear from my mother and sister. It was such a big relief.

After hearing from them I went upstairs to tell Justin and his family that I had finally gotten in touch with my family and that I was planning on heading back home the next day to go help them. So Wednesday morning I woke up super early, cleaned out my car and drove home, but not without incident. As I drove the most ass backwards way home because the parkways were closed I lost my passenger side mirror and got myself a nice, deep, long scratch across the side of my car.

Despite all of that I made it home and I beeped my horn like a crazy woman when I got in front of my house. When I ran out of my car I noticed that there were cars (Including my parent's) everywhere. Unfortunately all of the cars I saw were dead, including both of my parent's cars. The water got so high that it completely submerged my fathers car and got halfway up my mothers.

Hearing my honks my mother ran over to give me a hug, then she and my sister told me about the water rushing into our house from the backyard flooding our den in almost five feet of water, how the water was four inches away from our front door and about how scary the fire down the block was. When we were done talking and I inspected our den, my mom and I took Nella for a walk so I could see some of the damage around the neighborhood.
Once we were done doing that we pulled on our rain boots and started cleaning out our den that still had (Has) three inches of water in it. While we were cleaning one of my uncles stopped by to tell us that my cousin Lisa's mother had died earlier in the morning (She had cancer and she had been really sick for a long time), amongst other things.

At some point my father came home from work for lunch. While he was home we decided that we'd drive him to work, charge our phones for a bit because he had power and we'd drive around town checking up on friends and surveying the damage.

While we were driving around we saw how messed up things really were. There are pieces of our boardwalk all the way in the middle of the city, sand covering streets, fallen trees everywhere, water still in the streets and pieces of people's lives all over the streets.

When we were out looking for my sister's friend Kim we found her car with all of the windows open and we saw that the picture of her descend father and his memorial card were still on her dashboard, so we took it out for safe keeping for her.

After running into a few friends and not finding others we headed back to our father's job, picked him up and headed back to our house so they could pack some stuff up and try to find a hotel to stay at so they could take hot showers. Unfortunately they couldn't find a hotel, but we were able to get dinner -- Yay Greek restaurant that was open! Since they couldn't find anywhere to stay I headed back to Justin's (Which got power back at some point in the evening) and they headed back home (They didn't want to stay by Justin's because his family was there and my family is stubborn).

On Thursday I woke up early again, threw in a load of laundry and started to run around trying to find things to help out my family and Erin's. I bought a ton of water, snacks, hand sanitizer, antibacterial spray, and a computer battery back up for them to charge their phones on. I also went on a hunt for gas. It was a pain in the ass to find gas and when I did I had to wait on line (Thankfully not for hours like people have been) and there was only premium left.

Once that was all said and done I headed back home to give my family the supplies I bought, but not before running to check on Erin who I hadn't seen since 3am on Sunday morning. When I pulled up and got out of the car she ran over to me shouting my name and hugged me for a long time. After she was done hugging me I went to show her my supply stash in the car and told her to take what she needed, but she didn't want to because when she lives wasn't as hit as badly as where I live. We stood by my car talking for a bit, she told me that they were having a wake for her cousin that evening and asked me if I could get her family some Duraflame logs and bring them with me to the wake because they were going to try and get her fireplace (That has never been used) up and running to heat the house up. I told her I'd try, said goodbye and headed to my parent's house. I spent the rest of the afternoon helping them clean and trying to salvage pictures that had gotten wet in the flood.

When everyone was tired I drove them to my uncle's house so they could take hot showers, etc. My parents and sister weren't planning on staying there but my uncle talked them into it, so I left them there but not before taking a request from my uncle to bring bacon, eggs, rolls and cheese over the next morning. I headed back to Justin's so I could change into something decent looking to go to the wake, we had dinner, I went in search of Duraflame logs and a mini birthday cake fore Erin's grandmother (Erin texted me about it at some point in the afternoon) and then we drove to the funeral home. We missed the first hour of the wake because the first store I went into didn't have the Duraflame logs, so we stayed for the second hour and talked with Erin, her parents and Maria. I think they really appreciated it.

Friday morning I took the breakfast goodies I bought the night before and drove over to my uncle's house. My mother cooked everything up and we all had breakfast before driving to La Guardia Airport because my father found out that they had rental cars there. We picked up two cars and went back home to do some more work -- On her way home my mother saw that her and my sister's favorite Thai restaurant was open and she picked up lunch for all of us. After eating and doing everything we could, I headed back to Justin's, my mother & sister headed back to my uncle's house and my dad went to work.

I didn't go back on Saturday because my parents told me not to seeing as I'm sick and there is a gas shortage. So I spent the day cleaning Justin's apartment and applying for Federal Disaster Unemployment Assistance (You can call here if you are out of a job because of Sandy also 1-888-209-8124) because my job was destroyed from what I hear from my Director and Assistant Director. So yup, I'm currently a jobless librarian. I'll have to wait and see what happens with my library.

The highlight of my day was the fact that my friend called to tell me she and her girlfriend were going to be in the area to drop stuff off to her mother and wanted to see if Justin and I wanted to have dinner with them. I jumped at the chance to have a normal social interaction with friends and told them we'd absolutely meet up with them. So for an hour or so I got to pretend things were normal. It was nice.

Today I spent my day babysitting Justin's sister while he, his mother and stepfather went back to their house to clean up. We really didn't do anything spectacular, we just watched a bunch of movies on Netflix and I baked us some sugar cookies. So that's where I'm at...

Despite how I spent my last two days I cannot explain to you how tired I am. Between worrying about my family and friends, running around trying to get supplies, cleaning up our house, dead people, family arguments, the idea of not having a job to go back to and some bronchitis it's a wonder I haven't just shut down. I'm just glad everyone is okay and I'll just have to see what happens with each new day.

Mini Rant: Closing The Library Because Of Sandy...

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love my library and I love my Director but not when it comes to weather related issues. The area where I live and work was put under mandatory evacuation and it took hours after the announcement was made for someone to get in contact with me to give the official word that the library would be close tomorrow. I mean seeing as there was a mandatory evacuation it was kind of a no brainer that we wouldn't open, but c'mon we should have been informed hours before we actually were because people need to make arrangements. It was just so irritating to me. I mean I know I should be happy that I'm somewhere safe and that I don't have to worry about traveling in that weather tomorrow, but there was no reason for them to take so long to contact the staff.

Since When Do The Freaks Come Out During The Day...

There isn't going to be a full moon until next Wednesday but it sure feels like there is gonna be one tonight. I've dealt with so much weird crap today it isn't funny. I wasn't even in for five minutes this morning when a mother rolled in with her five kids, one of them being a toddler who was wearing nothing but a t-shirt and a diaper. I flipped when I saw this little boy running around the department with no pants on. I immediately ran to a phone to call my Director to see if I had the right to say anything to this mother. Unfortunately he was dealing with a crazy patron who claimed she paid a fine for a book she lost from another library that we actually paid for. Because he was dealing with her I never got an answer from him (Apparently he had been dealing with her since 9:30am, I came into work at 11:00am), so I ended up have a pow wow with "Amy" and "Julia" to try to figure out what to do. We decided that we needed to ask her to leave so "Amy" walked into the picture book room and told her that her child needed to be wearing pants. The woman didn't even look at her. She came back into the office to tell us what happened and then she walked right back into the room and repeated herself. Again the woman didn't answer, but five minutes later she called the rest of her children over and told them they were leaving and they left. She came back fifteen minutes later with her kids and this time they were all wearing pants.

A couple of hours later we had a patron hand "Lori" a picture book and she told her that the book had booklice. I didn't see the book or bugs on it but "Lori" did say there was a little bug on it. I called my Director when she and "Emily" asked me what they should do with the book and he told me to withdraw and chuck it.

Maybe an hour later we had a man bathing himself in our mens room. According to a patron some dude was just in there without a shirt on just giving himself a good rub down. Thankfully it was around the time that our Security Guard was in because he dealt with that one.

"Emily" got crazy attitude from a babysitter after she told her the name of an author and told her to look under the letter of the authors last name. The babysitter peaked in the stacks, told "Emily" she didn't know where to look because she wasn't a librarian. This just caused "Emily" to go on a rant about her knowing that the girl learned in school how to look up books. It wasn't good.

Then everyone was spilling drinks all over the place. We don't even allow food and drinks in our department because the carpet is still relatively new, so these people were super wrong.

In addition to all of the stuff above, I just had a lot of patrons with problems today. They weren't necessarily library problems but I had to play therapist to several mommies throughout the course of the day.

On top of everything else "Marie" called in sick claiming that her daughter wasn't feeling well when she got back from camp. We all knew she called in sick because she lives about forty minutes away and there is supposed to be a crazy storm tonight. She didn't want to drive home in the storm. So now I was supposed to get off at 7:00pm and I am working an extra two hours to cover the reference desk while "Amy" does all of her Thursday night programs.

NOTE: Our Department Head is on vacation this week, so everyone in my Department is coming to me with questions.

Smack My Librarian Up...

So as of about two days ago my Director decided that every time I curse and he hears it that he is going to hit me upside the head with a rolled up journal (FYI: He isn't the only person that hits me in the building). I've been hit two time as of thus far and I've run away from him a handful of times. I curse a lot so I feel like this is going to get tiresome for one of us, hopefully he just gives up and lets me continue on with my potty mouth.

I Hate Julia...

I swear "Julia" is the biggest asshole I have ever met. She comes in at 9:30am today (Which she was scheduled to do) but as soon as she got in she had to make a ten minute personal call. While she is doing God knows what I was situating myself on one of the reference computers (I had my e-mail open, blogs I read up, etc.) when a patron came over. I went into the stacks to help the patron out and when I come back "Julia" is all comfy at my computer and she didn't even think twice about the fact that I was there first. The minute I saw her I was like "Excuse me, I had my e-mail open and I was working on stuff..." she just looked at me and said "Oh, I saw your e-mail open, I opened a new window. Do you wanna close your stuff out?" I wanted to scream at her. I was there first!!! I closed my stuff out and stormed into the office. Two minutes later I walked out and said that I needed to finish the work I was doing and print out a few items to order. She stuttered and asked it I needed the computer she was on. I practically yelled at her and said yes because that was computer I had all of the patrons information on. She kept her ass in the chair and slid over. I was so mad. She pissed me off to the point were I started to have a TMJD flare up and I was getting a headache.

After a few more stupid thing flew out of her mouth I had it. I stormed up to the administrative office to see if our Director was in. He wasn't, so I told the Payroll Lady that I needed leave because if I didn't I might punch "Julia" is her ugly face. She spent a good twenty minutes talking me down and convinced me not to leave, but I was still slightly annoyed.

Apparently while I was gone she was giving patrons incorrect information and she pissed both "Marie" and "Amy" off. At least I wasn't the only one, I guess.

Career Day 2012: Middle School Edition...

It's that time of year again... Career Day time!
Today our Director sent Lenni and I to the local Middle School to talk to the kiddies about becoming librarians. We had the pleasure of speaking to two groups of about twenty middle schoolers for about forty-five minute each about ourselves, how we decided to become librarians and librarianship.

It wasn't as bad as we thought it was going to be. Especially since we were placed in our own room and weren't grouped with the educators like last year -- Here is last years entry.

I mean, none of the kids that we had actually picked listening to the librarians speak (I know this is true because it was the first question I asked each group as they settled down) but Lenni and I made the best of it and got them laughing. They might not wanna be librarians when they grow up but we defiantly changed their minds about what librarians do and that we all aren't old scary ladies.

Getting Yelled At...

"Marie" just informed me that both she and "Julia" walked in late this morning and our Director ended up yelling at "Julia" about being 10 minutes late. But as they were walking up the stairs together "Julia" was talking about how he had yelled at the two of them. "Marie" said she responded with a snarky "I have legitimate reasons for being late..." and "Julia" didn't get she was being mean. But good, she got yelled at. She deserved it because she is a useless useless woman.

Ready Or Not, A Hurricane Is Coming...

After torturing us for the majority of the day yesterday our Director came into the library during his vacation and told us that we'd be closed today -- I was super exited because I was supposed to be the Saturday librarian and before he decided to close I actually asked for personal leave because I really didn't wanna deal with this crap today.

So as soon as I got home yesterday I packed my bags, packed up my room just in case, covered the things I couldn't pack away with tarps, said bye to my parents and headed over to Justin' because he lives in a better spot on Long Island than I do.

Once I was there I complained to him about everything I had to do and then he took me out to dinner. After dinner we came back and put all of the patio furniture into the garage -- Which took forever because there was tons of crap in the backyard. While we were putting stuff away Phil called me and asked me if Justin and I wanted to join him and a few of our other friends out at a bar for pre-hurricane drinks. Obviously we took them up their offer and hung out with them for a few hours.

This morning Justin and I spent our time getting last minute items together, taping up windows, etc. After finally getting everything done my mother showed up, followed by his mother and his sisters. Since they've arrived we've been hanging out watching various kiddie movies and eating snacks. We're still waiting for Erin and Justin's stepfather to arrive and then the hurricane party is complete.

August 25, 2011

Keeping Up With The Hurricane...

I'm still at the library right now, but my entire work day has been dedicated to hurricane stuff. Between having fifty million questions for my Department Head (Or Director is currently on vacation so she and one of the ladies in the business office are in charge of the building, kinda) about what we should be doing, expressing my disdain for having to work this Saturday, schooling "Julia" on the shit that could possibly occur over the weekend, looking for various items that are in stores, etc. So needless to say I'm not having a very fun day at work.

August 23, 2011

Earthquake...

I'm sure by now you all know that there was a 5.8 magnitude earthquake that shook the east coast and we sure as hell felt it here at my library. Myself, my Department Head and "Marie" were all sitting in the office when it happened, "Amy" was stuck in the elevator and "Julia" was in the staff room microwaving something. We had patrons freaking asking if they should evacuate -- I actually told someone that they'd just end up dying outside instead of inside.

All in all it was pretty interesting, especially since our Director is away on vacation and the person in charge freaked out -- She was screaming for everyone to get out. I wonder what our Director would have done if he was here.

July 30, 2011

We Suck...

It's Saturday and I'm stuck in the library. It's been a relatively quiet day but as of thus far "Marie" and I have had two patrons basically tell us that our library sucks.

Patron #1 came in dresses like a dominatrix asking if we had a fax machine that she could use. I said no and she starts rambling on saying things like "What kind of library doesn't have a fax machine... Blah blah blah blah blah..." I told her we have fax machines but they aren't for public use and I directed her where she could go to fax her documents. She left mumbling. "Marie" doesn't think that I should have told her where to find one and started talking shit about the way the chick was dressed.

Patron #2 comes in and ask if we have audio books for two/three-year-old. I tell her where she can find them and point her in the right direction. She comes back and starts bitching at "Marie" and I about how the majority of them are cassette tapes and how we should join the 21st century. I point out to her that I don't order them and she'd have to talk to my Department Head about that. I also inform her that when we got rid of all of our VHS tapes a bunch of patrons complained to us. She proceed to tell us that we should have everything for the children and there must be a place to store things. I looked at her and said the space you see is what we have. Then she started complaining about the way the building was set up. Eventually she asked if she could write a note to our Director. I gave her a piece of scrap paper and told her she could leave it in the suggestion box. She went to sit down and write something but walked out without putting it in the box. Oh well...

Poll On Fauntas & Pinnell...

If you do, could you please let me know how it's working for you? Our Director wants us to label our books (What little we actually have that are on the list), so that it is easier for the parents to find them or something like that. Thanks so much!

While You Were Gone...

Apparently interesting things still occur even when I'm not in the library -- Who would have thunk. While I was on vacation last week "Marie" and "Julia" had it out over ceiling fans ("Marie" ended up blowing up on "Julia" after she got snippy with her for turning the fan off), a man came into the department with his child wearing only a Speedo® (There is obviously more than one problem with this, but the main one was that he had a huge package and you could see everything. They had to call the Director down. It wasn't pretty I heard) and they interviewed replacements for that evil bitch "Sarah's" job (I wish I would have been around for it because I know within 5 minutes of meeting a person if I'll get along with them or not. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens). I honestly wish I was around when all of these things happened, but I still enjoyed my vacation and Miami still beats the library.

Aside from all of the above, I was told that the department was extremely quiet without me around -- This was half due to the fact that people weren't talking to one another and half because my awesomely obnoxious self wasn't around. My Department Head was telling me that it was deathly boring with out me around. I guess they need me around for there to be some life in this department.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes...

For the past week (while our Department Head has been on vacation) "Julia" has taken the liberty of changing around her schedule without asking. Today our Department Head returns from vacation, so I'm hoping the shit hits the fan and "Julia" gets in a shit storm of trouble when she comes into work tomorrow.

Schedule Changes She Made
  • June 28th - She admitted to sleeping in to "Marie" thus she came in late and she decided it was okay (Without consulting our Director*) to stay at work an extra half an hour to make up the time.
Actual Hours: 9:00am-5:00pm
Hours Worked: 9:30am-5:30pm
  • June 30th - She changed her hours, thus causing a lack of coverage in the afternoon.
Actual Hours: 10:00am-6:00pm
Hours Worked: 9:30am-5:30pm
  • July 5th - I've yet to check her time card, but she stayed an extra half an hour
Actual Hours: 9:00am-5:00pm
Hours Worked: ?am-5:30pm
  • July 6th/July 8th - Changed her day off from Friday to Wednesday without consulting the rest of the of the staff. Which if she did she would know that the likelihood anyone actually being in the library at 9:00am could be slim to none -- I changed my schedule so that I could cover the desk this fine morning.
Actual Hours: Wednesday 9:00am-5:00pm / Friday Off
Hours Worked: Wednesday Off / Friday 9:o0am-5:00pm
* It is a rule at our library that if one comes in late for whatever reason that they cannot make up the time unless given permission by the Director. And he almost always says no and makes the person in question use their own time (Annual leave, sick, etc) to cover the missing hours.

IDK...

I still honestly have no idea what is going on in terms of the texts I got before I went to work yesterday, aside from the fact that it isn't our Director being a pain. That is all I was told. I'll have to do a bit of snooping tomorrow because I didn't get any done today. I'll eventually find out, I always do.
