Things People Ask/Say When You Have An Unnatural Haircolor...

As you may or may not have noticed, I currently have purple hair* and when you work in a public setting as I do you hear a lot of comments whenever you change something about your appearance -- People just love making comments. So I thought I'd share with you all some of my favorite comments as of late regarding my purple hair...

"I Love Your Hair! How Did You Get It That Color?"
I had my sister** (Who is technically a licensed beautician, who does not actually work in the field) dye my hair.

"Does It Wash Out?"
Nope.

"How Long Does It Last?" and/or "How Long Do You Plan On Leaving It That Color?"
Well seeing as I had to bleach my hair to be able to dye it this color, a good long while. Which is promptly followed by...

"You Had To Bleach Your Hair To Get It That Color?!"
Umm, yeah... I have naturally dark hair, so yeah I had to bleach it to make it purple.

And then from there we move on to the people that think they are being cute and/or witty...

"Is It Natural?" followed by an awkward laugh
Do you really think you're the first person that thought it was cute to ask me that? I've had a dozen other people say that to me. You are not original.

"Isn't Halloween Over?"
I didn't dye my hair purple for Halloween. I was actually planning on dying my hair purple back in April/May but Justin proposed to me and I figured it would be best to wait on dying my hair an unnatural color before the wedding -- Not that I would have cared if I had a weird hair color in my wedding photos***.
"What Does Your Husband Have To Say About Your Hair Color?"
He has nothing to say about it. It's just a fact of life that he accepts.

"Do You Have A Job?"****Yes I have a fucking job! I have purple hair, a job, a BA in English and a MA in Library and Information Science with a focus on School Media -- I had to stop myself from cursing out the person who asked me this.

In addition to the above I have people tell me my hair is awesome, they love it and then 90% of the older women tell me that they'd love to dye their hair an unnatural color but they aren't brave like me and/or they can't because of their jobs.

So yeah, those are just a handful of things people ask when you are rocking an unnatural hair color.

* This is not the first time I've had an unnatural hair color since I've been working as a librarian.
** My sister dyes my hair 95% of the time that I have it colored. The other 5% I do myself.
*** I'm in my cousin Lisa's bridal party and she is terrified that I'm going to have an unnatural hair color during her wedding.
**** This one was asked while I was at the post office and not in the library.

Getting My Hair Did...

Seeing as I'm leaving for Vegas on Thursday I had my sister add a fresh coat of black dye to my hair because I haven't dyed my hair in almost nine months and it needed some TLC. You have no idea how much I enjoyed having my hair dyed, I'm a hair dye crackhead and it was killing me not dying it for months.

Bye Bye Hair...

Because I worked an extra hour last night I got to leave work at 3:00pm today. So instead of going home I jetted over to one of the local salons and had the stylist chop off all of my hair. I cut off over 12 inches of my hair. I ended up cutting off all of that hair because my hair wasn't feeling so hot after all of the bleaching and dying I've done over the past several months -- Unfortunately because my hair wasn't doing so hot I couldn't donate the hair, which is what I normally do when I cut off large amounts of hair. I do not currently have a picture of my hair because I have black dye in it and I need to wash it, style it, etc... As soon as I have a picture I will post it.

People Who Dress Like Librarians? All Sex Addicts...

Apparently it is hard to fathom that someone with pink hair would be in charge of a program at the library. While I was doing video game night I had a mother question the fact that I was the person responsible for the program. After she sat in the room for a bit she left and she told "Amy" that she could believe that I was in charge and that I knew exactly what I was doing -- Apparently that was a compliment.

FYI: Just because I have pink hair doesn't mean I don't know what I'm doing. I'm actually more aware of what is going on and how to do things than anyone else in the damn library.

Drawing Club...

At the end of Drawing Club last Friday I found this on the table:

One of the kids drew a picture of me and my pink hair! I love it!

Pink Haired Misfit...

I just realized that I never actually posted here that I dyed my hair pink last Thursday night. I mentioned it on my Twitter™ and forgot to do it here. But yeah, my hair is pink. Half of the staff loves it and the other half hates it. Take a look and make up your own mind on my hair.

Bleach...

I just re-dyed my hair red so it made me think of something that happened a few days ago while I was trying to help a little girl in the computer room. While I was in the room these teenaged boys asked me if I dyed my eyebrows. I explained to them that I did because my eyebrows are naturally super dark and since I dyed my hair red I need to do my eyebrows. The proceeded to ask me how I did it and I told them that I had to bleach them first. When I said that they were like "How did you use bleach without getting it into your eyes? Did you like splash it on?" They thought I used like Clorox® or something to do it. I had to explain to these teenage boys that you don't use liquid bleach to dye hair. It was an odd conversation

Ginger Librarian Trainee...

So, after I blogged about my blah Sunday I got my sister to dye my hair red. It took forever and a year but I think it was totally worth it.

Here is my artistic rendition of my hair transformation:

Here is what my hair actually looks like:

First Week Of September...

I would like to apologize for not updating in almost a week. I've been crazy busy all week and the only reason I really have time to blog right now is because I'm home sick -- I feel super blah today. Funny thing about me not going to work today, I called in sick at 8:30am before the library even opened, I called and spoke with the Director and he said he'd tell my Department Head. An hour later I get a phone call from my Department Head questioning me about whether or not I was coming to work. I ensured her that I called and spoke with the Director which in turn made her mad at him. So they had a big communication fail. But enough about that, let me update you all on what was my past week work and play related.

Lets start off with work... As I mentioned in an early post we got new carpeting and tiles in the library, so I've been super busy helping my department head putting things back were they belong. Which has been a super shitty job because "Julia" and the other librarian "Amy" are unable to help us for whatever bull shit reasons. In addition the other ladies in my department just flat out refuse to help, leaving all of the work for my department head and I. So, that has eaten up a decent chunk of my time at work.

Aside from my "other assigned tasks" I've also had the pleasure of having to deal with the first day of after school tweens and teens -- The school year starting means that I'll have way more posts about chaos going on in my department because all of the amusing stuff happens during the school year. So, Wednesday was the first day of school here and it was also the first time I've had to deal with a huge group of teens in months. These particular teens decided to park themselves in our picture book room -- they did had two small children with them -- and be super loud. One teen in particular wanted to use our computers and when he was told he didn't have permission forms filled out by his parents and that he couldn't go on the computer he walked over to the group of teens and started asking them to fill out the forms and pretend to be his parent. He asked them quite loudly and within my earshot. I looked at all of them and informed them that I am neither deaf nor dumb, and that I could hear everything they were saying. They laughed when I said this and continued, only one of them was like "Hey guys, she can hear you and I don't think she is going to accept that permission form..." C'mon, what is wrong with these teens?! They really must think that they are guinuesses and that the rest of us are stupid. I just couldn't believe what was going on.

Later on the same kid that was trying to get on the computers asks me for two pieces of paper and I had him two pieces of white computer paper. He gets snippy with me and was all "I need lined paper!" My responce to him was "I'm not Staples, go buy yourself a pack of loose leaf for .99¢" He made a face at me and told me not to be sarcastic. I informed him as I walked away from him that that wasn't sarcasim, that was me being snarky and mean.

In addition to these fun incidents, on Friday our biggest problem teen returned and was back giving us all attitude. I look forward to seeing how she behaves this year. I'll keep you updated.

That's enough with the bad teens. On Friday one of my favorite kids brought her pet duck into the library for a quick visit, which only caused minor problems because I failed to inform my department head about the possiblity of a duck visit. Aside from her everyone else was excited to see the duck, which had a dress, diaper and leash on. It was super cute.

In terms of my personal life; I got a hair cut and dyed my hair black on Thursday, I hung out with my college friends Friday & Saturday (My roommate jumped on me and wrapped her legs around me and she wouldn't let me go for a good ten minutes) and Sunday Justin and I went to a Mets game, then out for Cuban food after the game.
