Tonight I met the mother of two of my biggest problem teens and she was the nicest woman ever. The mother just so happened to be in the library with her youngest child while the younger of her two pain in the ass children was there and "Lori" noticed. So "Lori" and I ended up speaking to her about the boys and their behavior within the library.
She was so nice and understanding. A lot of parents get really nasty and uppity when you tell them about their children misbehaving, but this woman knew that her sons were pains in the asses and she was so ashamed of their behavior. She kept apologizing to us and telling us that she speaks to them all of the time about the way the conduct themselves.
It was so nice to meet a parent that doesn't think that their children fart rainbows. She even made a point of tell us that she is very weary of the stories that her children tell her and she knows that a good chuck of their stories are lies. I do not understand how such a lovely woman could have such pain in the ass children.

Career Day 2012: Middle School Edition...
It's that time of year again... Career Day time!
Today our Director sent Lenni and I to the local Middle School to talk to the kiddies about becoming librarians. We had the pleasure of speaking to two groups of about twenty middle schoolers for about forty-five minute each about ourselves, how we decided to become librarians and librarianship.
It wasn't as bad as we thought it was going to be. Especially since we were placed in our own room and weren't grouped with the educators like last year -- Here is last years entry.
I mean, none of the kids that we had actually picked listening to the librarians speak (I know this is true because it was the first question I asked each group as they settled down) but Lenni and I made the best of it and got them laughing. They might not wanna be librarians when they grow up but we defiantly changed their minds about what librarians do and that we all aren't old scary ladies.

Computer Chaos...
Tonight was the night of computer permission problems. First it started off with two girls giving "Amy" and "Lori" issues because one of them didn't have permission to be on our computers and they forged her mother's signature and called pretending to be a parent, etc. They also ended up stealing a library card from the Circulation Desk and pretending like it was hers and that a clerk gave it to them. It was bad, we had to get the Director involved. It was a mess.
After dealing with them we had two boys come in and one didn't have his card, but he had his ID so "Emily" went to our book to look up what permission he had and he wasn't in the book at all. She called him out for having a library card with a permission sticker on it but not being in our book (We think he stole a sticker from our desk). We argued with him a bit and he told us to fuck off, so I kicked him and his friend out but apparently they went downstairs, lied to the clerks to get a new card and lied to the Adult Librarians about their age so they could get on their computers. I found out and had the security guard kick them out.
It was ridiculous. We could not believe the bull we dealt with tonight. We're gonna have to talk to our Department Head about all of these computer issues tomorrow.

Sweet Little Visit...
I just had the sweetest visit from "Favorite Volunteer #2's" little sister. She ran up behind me after I was helping someone to give me a hug. She is just so sweet and awesome, she is actually one of the truly good middle school aged children that I have to deal with (I believe that 95% of middle schoolers are evil and that there is 5% that are still descent humans). She stood around and chatted with me for a bit and then I helped her pick out an armful of books for her to read for the rest of her winter break. Then she had to run because her father was waiting for her downstairs. I love little visits like that.

Middle Schoolers...
I want to know what is wrong with the current generation of middle school aged children. I know that middle schoolers throughout the ages have typically not been the most desirable of humans because of all of the hormones and such. But I swear that the current batch have all been exposed to something that has caused them to be stupider than generations past and I honestly don't understand what possess them to do the crap that they do.
What did they do today you ask? Well, aside from the normal mouthy group (One girl in particular gave "Emily" an earful) and the ones that sneak on the computers after we tell them they aren't allowed on anymore (The two moron brothers that we banned from the computers for two weeks for looking at inappropriate websites), we had these two girls hiding underneath one of our desks in the computer wearing coats and such. What the hell would posses them to do that?! When I yelled at them to get from under the desk they giggles like fools and ran away. Why?! I don't understand the need to do such stupid crap. I hate middle school aged children.
