"Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls (and Everything in Between)" by Lauren Graham

In this collection of personal essays, the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood reveals stories about life, love, and working as a woman in Hollywood—along with behind-the-scenes dispatches from the set of the new Gilmore Girls, where she plays the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore once again.

In Talking as Fast as I Can, Lauren Graham hits pause for a moment and looks back on her life, sharing laugh-out-loud stories about growing up, starting out as an actress, and, years later, sitting in her trailer on the Parenthood set and asking herself, “Did you, um, make it?” She opens up about the challenges of being single in Hollywood (“Strangers were worried about me; that’s how long I was single!”), the time she was asked to audition her butt for a role, and her experience being a judge on Project Runway (“It’s like I had a fashion-induced blackout”).

In “What It Was Like, Part One,” Graham sits down for an epic Gilmore Girls marathon and reflects on being cast as the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore. The essay “What It Was Like, Part Two” reveals how it felt to pick up the role again nine years later, and what doing so has meant to her.

Some more things you will learn about Lauren: She once tried to go vegan just to bond with Ellen DeGeneres, she’s aware that meeting guys at awards shows has its pitfalls (“If you’re meeting someone for the first time after three hours of hair, makeup, and styling, you’ve already set the bar too high”), and she’s a card-carrying REI shopper (“My bungee cords now earn points!”).

Including photos and excerpts from the diary Graham kept during the filming of the recent Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, this book is like a cozy night in, catching up with your best friend, laughing and swapping stories, and—of course—talking as fast as you can.

"Everything I Want to Eat: Sqirl and the New California Cooking Hardcover" by Jessica Koslow & Maria Zizka

Jessica Koslow and her restaurant, Sqirl, are at the forefront of the California cooking renaissance, which is all about food that surprises us and engages all of our senses—it looks good, tastes vibrant, and feels fortifying yet refreshing. In Everything I Want to Eat, Koslow shares 100 of her favorite recipes for health-conscious but delicious dishes, all of which always use real foods—no fake meat or fake sugar here—that also happen to be suitable for vegetarians, vegans, or whomever you’re sharing your meal with.

The book is organized into seven chapters, each featuring a collection of recipes centered on a key ingredient or theme. Expect to find recipes for dishes Sqirl has become known for, as well as brand-new seasonal flavor combinations, including:
  • Raspberry and cardamom jam
  • Sorrel-pesto rice bowl
  • Burnt brioche toast with house ricotta and seasonal jam
  • Lamb merguez, cranberry beans, roasted tomato, and yogurt cheese
  • Valrhona chocolate fleur de sel cookies
  • Almond hazelnut milk
Koslow lives in LA, where everyone is known to be obsessively health-conscious and where dietary restrictions are the norm. People come into Sqirl and order dishes with all sorts of substitutions and modifications—hold the feta, please, add extra kale. They are looking to make their own healthy adventures. Others may tack breakfast sausage, cured bacon, or Olli’s prosciutto on to their order. So Koslow has had to constantly think about ways to modify dishes for certain diets, which in a way has made her a better, more adaptable cook.

Throughout this book, Koslow provides notes and thought bubbles that show how just about any dish can be modified for specific tastes and dietary needs, whether it needs to be gluten-free or vegan.

Everything I Want to Eat captures the excitement of the food at Sqirl—think of a classic grilled cheese turned playful with the addition of tomato coriander jam—while also offering accessible recipes, like blood orange upside-down cake, that can be easily made in the home kitchen. Moreover, it’s an entirely new kind of cookbook and approach to how we are all starting to think about food, allowing readers to play with the recipes, combining and shaping them to be nothing short of everything you want to eat.

So the last time I did one of these I was trying to get my hands on the audio book version of "Washington: A Life" by Ron Chernow, which I still haven't gotten. And because I couldn't get it then, I started reading "The Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo" by Amy Schumer because Nicole recommended it to me.

Before I started "The Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo" I didn't know how I'd feel about it because at that point I had never actually watched any of Amy Schumer's comedy, so I kinda went into the book blind. But that being said, I totally enjoyed the book. There were a lot of references to areas of Long Island I know very well, which is probably one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much.

But I enjoyed it, it was a quick and fun read.

Are you reading anything good? Lemme know!

Early Christmas Gifts + Giveaway | JORD Wood Watches...

The holidays are not so slowly creeping up and even though I already gave Justin his Christmas present, I'm sure there are still a handful of you out there that might still be looking for the perfect gift. And I obviously have a recommendation for all of you... Wood watches from JORD.

Yes, they gifted me a watch but I've owned another one (Which full disclosure, they sent to me also and you can read about here) for over a year now and have nothing but praise for JORD and their products, if I didn't I would not be talking to you all about them.

JORD, for those of you unfamiliar with them, is a watch company that creates beautiful timepieces out out a variety of sustainable wood and other high quality materials.

They recently started new customized engraving service just in time for the holidays and asked me if I wanted to give it a whirl. And because I love my Fieldcrest so much and don't want to share it with Justin anymore, I decided that I would and I would give the watch to Justin as a Christmas gift.

The particular piece I decided to get for Justin was the Conway (Dark Sandalwood & Burgundy) because it is just this gorgeous statement piece of a watch that would go with anything he is wearing. And there was just something about it that was so attractive and screamed gift for Justin.

In terms of the engraving, if you've been following me for a while you can probably kinda sorta guess what I had engraved... I had "I love you. Everlong." engraved on the back plate. I wanted to have "You've got to promise not to stop when I say when" because that lyric has always been a big part of our relationship, it was in our wedding vows to each other, etc. But the particular piece I chose had a twenty-five character limit. I mean, they have another engraving option where I could have had it done on the side of the box the watch comes in but I really wanted to have something done on the piece so that was always with him. So "I love you. Everlong." was it.

C'mon, that is one sweet engraved gift...

For those of you that wanna get down to the nitty gritty details on their customized engraving service... Like I mentioned above, JORD is offering two options for engraving. You can either do the watch engraving, where they engrave the back plate of the piece for an additional $35.00. Or you can have the wood engraving, where they engrave the side of the cedar wood presentation box that the watch comes in for an additional $45.00. Both options can be done in either block or script engraving. There are character limitations, so you'll have to visit the website to see those. And most importantly, engraving will extend your delivery time by up to seven business days so plan accordingly, customization is not a last minute thing but it is 150% worth it.

In addition to them generously giving me a watch for me to give as a gift, they've given me my very own gift card code to share with all of you. So if you click here you can fill out a form for a gift card (The gift cards are are available on a first come, first serve basis. One they are all redeemed, your gift card will no longer work).

So I hope you get to take advantage of that because these watches are seriously some of the most beautiful affordable time pieces I've come across and they make great gifts for any occasion. My sister's future brother-in-law actual received one from his bride the day of their wedding and he adores it.

If you do use the gift card code I'd love to see a picture of the piece you chose, and if you get the watch engraving what you had put on it or the side of the box.

For anyone interested here is JORD's description, as well as the specs on the particular watch I chose to receive:

Master your time with the new Conway Series. The chronograph functionality allows you to tackle your day, down to the last second if necessary.Classic design meets modern detailing with custom knurling on both the bezel and wrist line, and a new band that feature complementary wood and stainless steel links. Deep burgundy is a subtle accent to the deep chocolate tones in the sandalwood case and band, perfect for the muted and masculine wardrobe.

  • Sapphire crystal glass
  • Luminescent hands
  • Deployment buckle with push buttons
  • Screw-down crown
  • Case width: 42mm
  • Case thickness: 12mm
  • Lug ends: 49mm
  • Band thickness: 20mm
  • Band length: 161mm
  •
I am honestly in love with this watch and wish it came in a smaller size for myself because it's slightly too big for my tiny wrists. But I'll keep rocking my Fieldcrest that I got last year while Justin rocks this one.

* FTC Disclaimer: Wooden Watches by JORD provided me with the watch to review but all opinions are my own.

Being P's Groomswoman | The Engagement Party...

This past Saturday night was Phil's engagement (Or engaygment) party where he finally asked people to be in his bridal groom party, which includes yours truly and my lovely husband.

He gave each of his nine party members (Yes, there are nine people on each grooms' side) a shot glass with our names, the wedding date and "Groomswoman" or "Groomsman" etched into it. And he gave his dad, whom he asked in the sweetest speech ever to be his best man, a beer glass with stuff etched on it. It was really cute.

Unfortunately I didn't take very many pictures because the lighting was really bad at the place where they had the party (And two days before the party I broke out in rashes/hives from eating something from a fast food restaurant, so my face was and still is jacked up). But despite a lack of photographic evidence, we had a great time at the party.

YouTube today announced that it has ordered “The Keys of Christmas,” a holiday special starring global superstar Mariah Carey and YouTube musical sensation Rudy Mancuso that features original musical performances by many of the hottest acts around including Carey, Ciara, DJ Khaled and Fifth Harmony. “The Keys of Christmas” will debut on YouTube Red on December 19, 2016.

The star-studded ensemble cast will shepherd Mancuso on a magical adventure of the true meaning of Christmas. This seasonal tale, from Endemol Shine North America and its digital studio Endemol Shine Beyond USA and Just Entertainment Studios, will uncover what happens when you accidentally go off the grid on Christmas Eve with no phone and no way to function on this festive night.

World renowned and Grammy Award-winning music director Dave Meyers (Katy Perry’s “Firework,” Pink’s “Just Like Fire” and Rihanna’s “Where Have You Been”) will direct “The Keys of Christmas.” This special will also feature original musical performances by Alex Aiono, Boyce Avenue, Nicky Jam, Bebe Rexha and Gregory Brothers. Boxing legend Mike Tyson will make a special appearance, as he and the others join Mariah to show Rudy the true meaning of Christmas.
“Music is wildly popular on YouTube and we're excited to bring together some of the biggest names in music alongside some of the biggest stars on YouTube. I really feel like YouTube is step up their game with YouTube Red and I'm excited to see what other originals they have coming out. Especially if they can get DJ Khaled on board for some more because I absolutely adore him! Like if you're on Snapchat and you aren't following Khaled, you are missing out.

Adventures In Brooklyn | Exploring Green-Wood Cemetery...

Earlier in the month Phil, Justin and I went on a little adventure around Brooklyn that included a trip to the historic Green-Wood Cemetery. And because I took so many pictures (You guys know I love me a cemetery) while we were there I thought that I'd do a post dedicated to just our time there.

About Green-Wood Cemetery (From the Green-Wood website)
Founded in 1838 and now a National Historic Landmark, Green-Wood was one of the first rural cemeteries in America. By the early 1860s, it had earned an international reputation for its magnificent beauty and became the prestigious place to be buried, attracting 500,000 visitors a year, second only to Niagara Falls as the nation’s greatest tourist attraction. Crowds flocked there to enjoy family outings, carriage rides, and sculpture viewing in the finest of first generation American landscapes. Green-Wood’s popularity helped inspire the creation of public parks, including New York City’s Central and Prospect Parks.

Green-Wood is 478 spectacular acres of hills, valleys, glacial ponds and paths, throughout which exists one of the largest outdoor collections of 19th- and 20th-century statuary and mausoleums. Four seasons of beauty from century-and-a-half-old trees offer a peaceful oasis to visitors, as well as its 560,000 permanent residents, including Leonard Bernstein, Boss Tweed, Charles Ebbets, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Horace Greeley, Civil War generals, baseball legends, politicians, artists, entertainers and inventors.

A magnet for history buffs and bird watchers, Green-Wood is a Revolutionary War historic site (the Battle of Long Island was fought in 1776 across what is now its grounds), a designated site on the Civil War Discovery Trail and a registered member of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System.

On September 27, 2006, Green-Wood was designated a National Historic Landmark by the United States Department of the Interior, which recognized its national significance in art, architecture, landscaping and history.

After almost two centuries, Green-Wood is as beautiful as it was at its founding. But such historic beauty is fragile. Time and weather have taken their toll on marble sculpture, granite monuments, brownstone mausoleums, cast-iron signs and landscaped parkland.

Established in 1999, The Green-Wood Historic Fund’s mission is to maintain Green-Wood Cemetery’s monuments and buildings of historical, cultural and architectural significance; advance public knowledge and appreciation of this significance; and preserve the natural habitat and parklands of one of New York City’s first green spaces. With funding from memberships and donations, The Historic Fund not only preserves the past to enrich our future, but keeps a vibrant presence in our current time by presenting open-to-the-public events which include themed walking and trolley tours, book talks and special seasonal events.

I cannot wait to go back to Green-Wood and explore some more because we didn't even make a dent while we were there. Maybe next time we'll take the trolley or walking tour.

Things I Hate | Commercials Featuring Librarians...

True story, I hate commercials that feature libraries and/or librarians. They always seem to perpetuate the stereotype of the stuffy uptight librarian who is shushing people, which pisses me off beyond belief.

I know, I know... You're all probably like what sparked this random post? It's the damn Kit Kat commercials that I keep seeing...

I hate absolutely everything about this commercial. I hate the shushing. I hate the tight hair in a bun (Yes, I know I wear my hair in a tight bun on the regular). I hate the doubty clothing. I hate the idea that a "handsome" man and some chocolate can get someone to ignore wrongdoings.

Sorry about the mini rant. It's just that this commercial seriously pisses me off every time I see it and I just wanna scream at the TV.

Are there any commercials that piss you off? Lemme know!

Stuck In My Head | Do-Re-Mi...

Ever since seeing Lin-Manuel Miranda's 'Sound of Music' Home Movie on Ellen's YouTube Sunday night, I have had "Do-Re-Mi" from The Sound of Music (1965) stuck in my head.

I mean, it's not the worst Rodgers and Hammerstein song to have stuck in one's head. But it is stuck in my head nonetheless.

So here it is to get it stuck in your head...

Fun Fact: My sister literally watched The Sound of Music EVERYDAY for the longest time as a child. So I've seen The Sound of Music probably about a 100+ times.

No New Year's Eve Plans | Pitbull's New Year's Revolution...

So I just got a press release for Pitbull's New Year's Revolution and it made me realize that for the first time in years I have not made plans to do something on New Years Eve in advance. Why is this a problem? Because historically I'm notorious for making plans way in advance to lock people down for various occasions and I completely forgot to do that this year. And now I have no idea what's going on or who is available for what, so I'm gonna have to scramble to either throw a party or find some alternative plans. Which is slightly stressing me out, and I know it's a stupid thing to get stressed about but little things have been driving me nuts as of late.

I mean it wouldn't be the end of the World to stay in with Justin and watch the ball drop in our pajamas, but I like spending the evening with friends. So I'm just gonna have to start messaging people about it and trying to figure things out.

Do you have any plans for New Year's Eve? Or do you just skip celebrating altogether? Lemme know!

And for those of you that care, this is the press release that sparked my manic New Year's Eve-ness...

Last year, Mr. 305 was joined by an incredible lineup, including music legends Puff Daddy and the Family, EMPIRE superstars Jussie Smollett and Bryshere “Yazz” Gray, hit artists Shawn Mendes, Pia Mia, Camila Cabello and so many more.

It sounds like it's going to be a good show. I know we enjoyed last year's New Year's Revolution, so we'll probably have this on no matter if it's just Justin and I or a party, etc. I hope Martha shows up because I've been digging Martha & Snoop's Potluck Dinner Party (2016 - Present).
