Day's Halloween Party

Saturday night Day had her now annual Halloween party at her and Erin's apartment. And as in the past we had a theme, comic book villains (We just love being bad guys). So just about everyone showed up as some sort of DC comic villain -- Phil and Rob came dressed up as Eleven and Joyce from Stranger Things (2016-Present) but because they looked amazing we forgave them for not adhering to the theme.

We spent the evening drinking, eating, taking dumb photos and just bullshitting until we decided to go to one of the local bars to party it up with the rest of those celebrating Halloween that Saturday night.

It was a great night. I absolutely love getting dressed up for Halloween and doing stuff with my friends.

From The Hold Shelf (Or What I'm About To Read)...

As I was taking a picture of "The Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo" by Amy Schumer for Instagram yesterday I realized that I haven't done a From The Hold Shelf post since March. So I decided I needed to get on that and share what I'm reading/listening to with you guys...

"Washington: A Life" by Ron Chernow
Celebrated biographer Ron Chernow provides a richly nuanced portrait of the father of our nation and the first president of the United States. With a breadth and depth matched by no other one volume biography of George Washington, this crisply paced narrative carries the reader through his adventurous early years, his heroic exploits with the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, his presiding over the Constitutional Convention, and his magnificent performance as America's first president. In this groundbreaking work, based on massive research, Chernow shatters forever the stereotype of George Washington as a stolid, unemotional figure and brings to vivid life a dashing, passionate man of fiery opinions and many moods.

The Emmy Award-winning comedian, actress, writer, and star of Inside Amy Schumer and the acclaimed film Trainwreck has taken the entertainment world by storm with her winning blend of smart, satirical humor. Now, Amy Schumer has written a refreshingly candid and uproariously funny collection of (extremely) personal and observational essays.

In The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo, Amy mines her past for stories about her teenage years, her family, relationships, and sex and shares the experiences that have shaped who she is—a woman with the courage to bare her soul to stand up for what she believes in, all while making us laugh.

Ranging from the raucous to the romantic, the heartfelt to the harrowing, this highly entertaining and universally appealing collection is the literary equivalent of a night out with your best friend—an unforgettable and fun adventure that you wish could last forever. Whether she’s experiencing lust-at-first-sight while in the airport security line, sharing her own views on love and marriage, admitting to being an introvert, or discovering her cross-fit instructor’s secret bad habit, Amy Schumer proves to be a bighearted, brave, and thoughtful storyteller that will leave you nodding your head in recognition, laughing out loud, and sobbing uncontrollably—but only because it’s over.

Because I couldn't get my hands on a copy of "Alexander Hamilton" by Ron Chernow (Justin has a copy of it on his Kindle but I refuse to use an e-reader) I started listening to Chernow's "Washington: A Life" because Adam Savage was talking so highly of it on an episode of his podcast Still Untitled. And I must agree with Adam, it is an excellent biography and I was only up to chapter nineteen when my hold expired (I had it downloaded on Overdrive and now I have to wait to get it again). So as soon as I get my hands on another copy and finish it, I'll let you know how I feel about the rest of it.

Now because I can't finish that book I'm going to start Amy Schumer's "The Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo" which Nicole told me is funny as hell. We shall see...

Are you reading anything good, bad or meh right now? I'd love to know what you're reading.

Wedding Crashing | Lyle & Mollie's Wedding...

As I mentioned in my Life Update post this past weekend, I "crashed" my first wedding recently.

For months I'd been joking around with my sister's future brother-in-law Lyle and his fiancée Mollie, whom I both love, that I was going to crash their wedding. And after months of fun back and forth about me crashing their wedding and/or hiding the bushes like a creeper, I did. Well kinda sorta because they ended up invited Justin and I for cocktails, cake and dancing, which I told them they didn't have to do because I was just playing with them about crashing. But they insisted we join and Lyle even had my sister text me the day of the wedding to ask if I was crashing. And because the groom asked, Justin and I "crashed" their reception just in time for the party to really start. So we drank and danced and ate some fantastic cake in celebration of Lyle and Mollie.

I'm so glad we "crashed" because it was the most beautiful backyard wedding you've ever seen and they are such a wonderful couple.

Being K's Bridesmaid | Wedding Dress Shopping...

Over the weekend I had my first official duty as one of my sister's bridesmaids. I went dress shopping with my sister, our mother and Lisa. We went to two bridal shops here on Long Island, Village Bridal and Bridal Reflections in search of THE dress.
While we were at the first shop she officially asked Lisa and I to be her bridesmaids with these super cute and hilarious gifts that her wedding planners (Our friends Eileen and Jade) put together.
She didn't purchase a dress while we were out shopping but I'm pretty sure that she is going to end back up at Village Bridal to put a deposit on one of the dresses she tried on because she was pretty in love with it but wanted to check out her other options. We'll just have to wait and see...

Sunday At Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve...

Earlier today Justin and I decided to go on a little picnic and a walk around Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve, so I thought that I'd share the pictures that I snapped with all of you...
It was such a beautiful day and we had such a nice time. I hope you all enjoyed your Sunday also!

Life Update...

Last night while playing video games with Phil and Rob, Justin said to me that I was neglecting my blog. And because he of all people said that I thought that I should hop on here and just write.

As you know, my last post was recapping the first half of our trip to Asia and honestly, it took forever to get that one post done. I have part of the second half done but I'm dreading really getting into it because the first post was very draining (We did a lot while away and it's all meshing together, so I have to rack my brain to think of what we did, where we did it, etc). Plus I do do work at work, unlike what people think (This is me throwing shade at my friends and family who think I don't do anything at work, which is not true). So I'm going to get that done but not this week.

Also throughout the past couple of weeks I've been just busy with life and work stuff. I became Page Supervisor at work, so the Pages are driving me crazy. I'm also back in school. I went to New York Comic Con with Chas and got to hang out with some of her old coworkers from IGN. I "crashed" my sister's future brother-in-law's wedding. I attended my first quinceañera and got very drunk in the process. Justin and I had dinner with Phil and Rob last night, and it was the first time I'd seen Rob since the rafting trip in July. And today I'm going wedding dress shopping with my sister.

So yeah, it's not that I'm trying to neglect anyone or anything I've just been busy. But that being said, I'm going to make more of an effort and try to get myself writing more because it sucks when your husband throws shade at you about your blog.

Movie Trailer | Get Out...

I was recently sent the trailer for Jordan Peele's (Yes, Jordan Peele of Key and Peele) upcoming horror movie Get Out (2017) and I enjoyed it so much I had to share it with all of you.
In Universal Pictures’ Get Out, a speculative thriller from Blumhouse (producers of The Visit, Insidious series and The Gift) and the mind of Jordan Peele, when a young African-American man visits his white girlfriend’s family estate, he becomes ensnared in a more sinister real reason for the invitation.

Now that Chris (Daniel Kaluuya, Sicario) and his girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams, Girls), have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy (Catherine Keener, Captain Phillips) and Dean (Bradley Whitford, The Cabin in the Woods).

At first, Chris reads the family’s overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter’s interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he could have never imagined.

Equal parts gripping thriller and provocative commentary, Get Out is written and directed by Peele (Key and Peele) and produced by Blumhouse’s Jason Blum, as well as Sean McKittrick (Donnie Darko, The Box), Peele and Edward H. Hamm Jr. (The Box, Bad Words).  The film also stars Caleb Landry Jones (X-Men series), Milton “Lil Rel” Howery (The Carmichael Show), Betty Gabriel (The Purge: Election Year), Marcus Henderson (Pete’s Dragon) and Keith Stanfield (Straight Outta Compton).

Genre: Suspense Thriller
Cast: Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Bradley Whitford, Caleb Landry Jones and Catherine Keener
Written and Directed by: Jordan Peele
Produced by: Sean McKittrick, Jason Blum, Jordan Peele, Edward H. Hamm Jr.
Executive Producers: Raymond Mansfield, Couper Samuelson, Shaun Redick, Jeanette Volturno

How good does this movie look?! Do you think you'd go see it? Lemme know what you think.

Adventures In Asia | Our First Week In Japan...

As promised, here is a post about mine and Justin's adventures in Asia... But only the first seven days as of right now because we did a lot while we were away and it would be crazy for me to put everything in one post. So here is what I could remember (Because all of the days are starting to blur together and it hasn't even been a month since we went) of our trip....

Thursday August 25th, 2016
Justin and I flew fourteen hours non-stop from John F Kennedy International Airport in New York to the Narita International Airport in Tokyo, Japan -- Which was the longest flight either of us has taken thus far.
When we arrived in Toyko (At about 9:00PM on Friday, August 26th) we grabbed our carry ons and headed towards the train to travel to our Airbnb in Shibuya.

After what seemed like forever we made it to our Airbnb and just went to sleep.

Saturday August, 27th 2016 -- Tokyo
We started off our first full day in Tokyo by hitting up 7 Eleven for breakfast and money from the ATM (Which is where you should get money from if you are traveling in Japan) then heading to Akihabara (A shopping district for video games, anime, manga, and computer goods) to check out the arcades and old video game shops before going to the Akiba Fukurou Owl Cafe to chill with some owls. After our time with the owls we decided to have our first proper meal in Japan at this bomb little place that Justin found on TripAdvisor.
When we were done totally stuffing our faces we decided to try and get tickets to see DMM.PLANETS Art by teamLab, which was a bunch of interactive artwork that looked super cool. Unfortunately we could not get tickets, so we headed back to the Airbnb to shower and change because it was crazy hot out.

After our mini rest we were hungry again, so we headed over to Ichiran Ramen to have our first taste of authentic ramen. Which was fucking fantastic.
Despite being full we decided that we needed to wander around Shibuya and hit up a late night game center, where I played Tsum Tsum games, caught Pokemon and people watched until we got tired.

Sunday August 28th, 2016 -- Tokyo
We woke up relatively early and traveled by train to Mitaka to go to the Studio Ghibli Museum. Which was so utterly awesome if you are a Hayao Miyazaki fan.
After we were done at the museum we headed into Tokyo to have conveyor belt sushi at Numazuko Sushi, which was fantastic.

Once we were filled up with sushi we decided to visit the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden and then our first shrine, Meiji Jingu (Meiji Jingu is a Shinto shrine that is dedicated to the divine souls of Emperor Meiji and his consort Empress Shoken and was established on November 1, 1920).
When we finished at the shrine we walked around the forest around the shrine where we found some sort of festival/dance thing going on, which was pretty neat. Then we went back to the Airbnb to chill.

Monday August 29th, 2016 -- Tokyo
We woke up to some pretty crappy weather but we still decided to go grabbed breakfast from 7 Eleven and headed off to Tokyo Disneyland. The only Disney park I have ever been to where NO ONE speaks English.
Despite no one speaking English, as well as on and off rain and crazy heat, we had a good time.

After we had our fill of Disneyland (Which was around almost 5:00PM) we headed back to the Airbnb to shower and change, then head next door to Shibuya Mark City and waited to have sushi at Umegaoka Sushino Midori for dinner before calling it a day.

Tuesday August 30th, 2016 -- Tokyo
There was a typhoon passing through the area in the morning, so we stayed in the Airbnb until about 12PM when it had finally run its course. And then we headed back to Ichiran Ramen for another bowl of that bomb ramen.
After lunch we stopped by the statue of Hachikō outside of Shibuya Station.

For those of you that don't know about Hachikō, here is a snippet from his Wikipedia article...
In 1924, Hidesaburō Ueno, a professor in the agriculture department at the University of Tokyo, took Hachikō, a golden brown Akita, as a pet. Professor Ueno would commute daily to work, and Hachikō would leave their house to greet him at the end of each day at the nearby Shibuya Station. The pair continued their daily routine until May 1925, when Professor Ueno did not return. The professor had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and died, never returning to the train station where Hachikō was waiting. Each day for the next nine years, nine months and fifteen days, Hachikō awaited Ueno's return, appearing precisely when the train was due at the station.
After snapping a picture we headed to the Imperial Palace to walk around the grounds.
Eventually it started to rain, so we decided to catch a train to Shinjuku; where we spent the rest of the day played video games, visited the Samurai Museum and going to the Robot Restaurant to see the show.

Wednesday August 31st, 2016 -- Tokyo
Justin and I woke up crazy early and took an Uber down to the Tsukiji Fish Market in hopes of getting two of the 120 spots to see the tuna auctions. Which we did! But not before we got to catch a ride on the back of a Turret truck from a very nice worker who realized we were lost in the market and needed to get to the tuna auction area.
After waiting hours to watch the auction, which was pretty neat, we headed back to our Airbnb to grab our bags and head to the train station to catch the bullet train to Kyoto.

Once in Kyoto we got lunch then headed to our Airbnb, showered, changed and went for a walk to see the building Nintendo had started in back when it was a playing card company. After seeing the old Nintendo headquarters we of course had to see the new Nintendo headquarters, so we hopped on a train and stood in front of that building for awhile as Justin took pictures.
When we were done there we went back to the Airbnb to relax and research restaurants in the area for dinner.

Eventually after some arguing and weird Google Translate translations we ended up at a place called Tiger Hall that had awesome dumplings but some shitty soup for a late dinner. Then called it a night.

Thursday September 1st, 2016 -- Kyoto
We planned on starting off our day by heading to Jigokudani to see the snow monkeys but not even a quarter of the way up the stairs defeated me, so we turned back around (Which really sucked because I really wanted to see the snow monkeys) and just headed to Tenryu Shiseizen-ji to see the temple. Then wandered around the garden until we found the exit to the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest.
After getting our bamboo on we headed to Fushimi Inari Taisha to see the torii (Traditional Japanese gates most commonly found at the entrance of or within a Shinto shrines) that lead up to the inner shrine.
Once we were done shrine seeing, we headed back to the Airbnb to shower and change (Seeing a pattern?) and then we headed down to Gion to see if we could spot any Geisha. Which we did!

After spotting the Geisha we just spent the rest of the evening wandering around and while we were we found a cat cafe that we stopped into, a bunch of shops, etc.
So, that was mine and Justin's first week in Japan. Hopefully I will have the second part up sometime next week!
