365 Days Of Pictures: Day 183...

Teen Reading Club Party...

Earlier today I threw the party that I mentioned yesterday for the teens that finished the reading club. I started setting up for the party hours before it even started. I took a sheet and hung it up to create a makeshift photo booth, I set up a table with the props I cut out and other various dress up items, set up my tripod, I put out a variety of junk food (candy, chips, pretzels, cupcakes, soda, etc.), we bought five pizzas, etc. -- I spent a lot of time and energy setting things up.

The teens arrived, the party went well but they wanted nothing to do with all of the photo booth stuff I set up -- "Mini Page" and "Favorite Page #2" were shocked that the teens that attended didn't want their pictures taken. They spent the majority of the party playing with all of the balloons I had blown up and left around the room -- I was amazed at how much balloons entertained them.

They might not have done what I set up but they all thanked me and said that they had a good time throughout the party and as they were leaving. I don't understand our teens.

Photo Booth Props...

Honestly I spent the majority of my time at work today cutting out photo booth props to use at our teen reading club party tomorrow. I decided last week when "Favorite Page #2" and I were messing around with the random props I made that it would be a great idea to create a photo booth at the teen party because lets face it, what teen doesn't like photos of themselves doing stupid things. So I figured I'd hang a flat sheet on the wall, throw some random props and costume thingies on a table, set up my tripod, take pictures of them and e-mail them the end product.

Here are the props that I cut out. If you click on them you'll be able to download them and make your own for whatever reason you'd like -- I got them all from Oh Happy Day!

365 Days Of Pictures: Day 181...

Internetless Because Of Irene...

We had a delayed opening today at the library because of the chaos surrounding Irene (11:00am instead of 9:00am). Thankfully the building only had minor damage, which was mainly due to our crappy roof which leaks during normal rain stroms. So structurally we were fine, but we lacked internet access all day which made life slightly difficult.

Thankfully I am no longer a Circulation Clerk because they had the worst of it today. They had to deal with angry patrons who couldn't comprehend the idea of a backup system to check out their materials, etc. It was apparently really bad (They had eight carts and counting of materials that couldn't be checked in properly because of the lack of internet) and our Head Clerk was not happy about any of it.

Tons of people called out today to deal with various things or pretended like they did. When I got in in the morning I was the missing piece to the library opening because they cannot open the library without at least two clerks at the circulation desk, two adult librarians and two children's librarians, and I was the last of that equation to walk in.

All in all, my department was pretty dull all day and I was really grateful that it was because we dealt with a lot of chaos last week. The only thing that happened was that the teens that give us the most trouble finally returned from where ever they are shipped to over the summer. Fun times are about to start up again. I can't wait.

Just some of our hurricane supplies.

Ready Or Not, A Hurricane Is Coming...

After torturing us for the majority of the day yesterday our Director came into the library during his vacation and told us that we'd be closed today -- I was super exited because I was supposed to be the Saturday librarian and before he decided to close I actually asked for personal leave because I really didn't wanna deal with this crap today.

So as soon as I got home yesterday I packed my bags, packed up my room just in case, covered the things I couldn't pack away with tarps, said bye to my parents and headed over to Justin' because he lives in a better spot on Long Island than I do.

Once I was there I complained to him about everything I had to do and then he took me out to dinner. After dinner we came back and put all of the patio furniture into the garage -- Which took forever because there was tons of crap in the backyard. While we were putting stuff away Phil called me and asked me if Justin and I wanted to join him and a few of our other friends out at a bar for pre-hurricane drinks. Obviously we took them up their offer and hung out with them for a few hours.

This morning Justin and I spent our time getting last minute items together, taping up windows, etc. After finally getting everything done my mother showed up, followed by his mother and his sisters. Since they've arrived we've been hanging out watching various kiddie movies and eating snacks. We're still waiting for Erin and Justin's stepfather to arrive and then the hurricane party is complete.

Keeping Up With The Hurricane...

I'm still at the library right now, but my entire work day has been dedicated to hurricane stuff. Between having fifty million questions for my Department Head (Or Director is currently on vacation so she and one of the ladies in the business office are in charge of the building, kinda) about what we should be doing, expressing my disdain for having to work this Saturday, schooling "Julia" on the shit that could possibly occur over the weekend, looking for various items that are in stores, etc. So needless to say I'm not having a very fun day at work.

Milk & Tea...

Instead of going to bed last night I drew this and colored it in throughout the course of the day because it was totally dead all day long.

Hurricane Preparation...

As you should all know by know I live on Long Island and they are predicting that Hurricane Irene is going to head this way between Saturday and Sunday. Because of this Erin and I headed to the store earlier to pick up a few cases of water, candles, flashlights and other various items just in case -- Better safe than sorry!

I really hope it ends up swinging into the Atlantic and we bought everything we did for no reason because I have honestly never had to deal with a hurricane -- Last time a hurricane actually really hit Long Island was Gloria in 1985 and I was only six months old. So the idea of Irene heading up towards us and having to deal with power outages and such is not my idea of a fun weekend. Wasn't the earthquake enough? Why must we get an earthquake and a hurricane in the span of a week. I'll keep you up-to-date on everything.

.

No Later Than When A Watch Is Issued:
  • Fill vehicles with gas.
  • Get extra cash.
  • Fill prescriptions.
  • For mobile homes, secure tie-downs and prepare to evacuate when ordered.
  • Bring in loose objects from outside.
  • Prepare to secure all windows with shutters or plywood.
No Later Than When A Warning Is Issued:
  • Secure all windows with shutters or plywood.
  • Place valuables and important papers in a waterproof container and store on highest floor of home.
If You Are Told To Evacuate:
  • Follow all instructions from local officials, and leave immediately when told to do so.
  • Bring emergency supplies listed above.
  • Bring copies of important papers such as insurance policies and list and photos of your home’s contents.
  • Bring blankets, sleeping bags, books, and games.
  • Unplug appliances, turn off electricity and main water valve.
  • Lock windows and doors of your home.
  • Go!
If You Are Not Told To Evacuate:
  • Stay at home! Leave the roads available for those who must evacuate.
  • Clean bathtub with bleach, fill with water for washing and flushing (Not drinking).
  • Set fridge to maximum cold and keep closed.
  • Turn off utilities if told to do so by local officials
During A Hurricane:
  • Go to an interior room on the lowest level of the structure in which you’re taking shelter.
  • Stay away from windows and doors, even though they’re covered with shutters or plywood.
  • During extremely strong winds, lie under something sturdy such as a stairwell or large piece of furniture.
  • Do not go outside, not even during passage of the eye. If the eye passes directly over you, the winds could become very weak, but only for a very short period. It will not be long before hurricane-force wind resume, blowing from the opposite direction as before the eye arrived.
After A Hurricane:
  • Help might not come for up to a few days, and power could be out for days or even weeks.
  • Avoid driving on roads covered by water and/or debris. It is often difficult to determine the depth of water covering a road. Turn around, don’t drown.
  • Avoid downed power lines. Stay away from objects that are touching a downed power line, such as a fence or tree.
  • Do not touch anything electrical if you are wet. Stay out of water that could be touching anything electrical, such as in a basement with electrical appliances, or in flooded areas outside where there could be downed power lines.
  • Only use a generator in an outdoor, well-ventilated area, and closely follow manufacturer’s instructions. Many people have died in the aftermath of a hurricane from inhalation of poorly ventilated carbon monoxide from a generator.
  • Use flashlights instead of candles for light. Candles pose a serious fire hazard.

Happy Birthday Dad...

Today is my dad's birthday so I ended up drawing this, I didn't give it to him or anything seeing as I drew a girly cake but he inspired it.

Did You Feel It...

Earthquake...

I'm sure by now you all know that there was a 5.8 magnitude earthquake that shook the east coast and we sure as hell felt it here at my library. Myself, my Department Head and "Marie" were all sitting in the office when it happened, "Amy" was stuck in the elevator and "Julia" was in the staff room microwaving something. We had patrons freaking asking if they should evacuate -- I actually told someone that they'd just end up dying outside instead of inside.

All in all it was pretty interesting, especially since our Director is away on vacation and the person in charge freaked out -- She was screaming for everyone to get out. I wonder what our Director would have done if he was here.

The mouse isn't bleeding, it was supposed to be lipstick on the napkin.

Goodbye Pages...

It's that time of year when all of the Pages are either returning to college or heading there for the first time, so to say goodbye I took them out for coffee and snacks. It is always so sad when they leave, I hate having to deal with new Pages that don't know what they are doing and that I have no emotional connections with -- I really do love my Pages and we are all very good friends despite the age difference (Which is between four years "Favorite Page #2" & eight years "Favorite Page #3"). Not seeing them during the week is gonna suck because I have more fun with them than I do with the majority of the rest of the staff but they'll be back eventually.

Saturday In The City...

Yesterday Justin and I headed into New York City for one of my college friend's 25th birthday party. We decided that we didn't wanna have lunch with them at Dallas BBQ (We both wanted pizza from Artichoke) and that we'd meet up with them at McSorley's. As we were heading downtown the subway we were going to take was out of services and we ended up wasting tons of time trying to get where we were going in some convoluted way Justin had "figured out" -- It was not pretty and I was not happy with Justin.

Eventually we got to Artichoke and he bought me a slice of pizza for all the trouble we had getting there. Once we were done eating our pizza we headed towards McSorley's. Once we were there we waited outside for about 10-15 minutes until everyone else showed up. The ten of us headed inside, got a table relatively quickly and began ordering obscene amounts of McSorley's Light and Dark.

After McSorley's we started heading towards Down The Hatch because the birthday boy wanted some fried brownies, but we ended up taking a detour at West 3rd Common because we saw the happy hour special as we were walking past. After a drink or two we headed to our intended destination. Once we got there we realized we still had tons of time to take advantage of their $1.00 draft and $2.00 shot specials. When my roommate arrived (She is always late) I asked her if she wanted to do a shot of Cafe Patrón with me, so we order two shots and we thought it wouldn't be part of the special but we were pleasantly surprised to find out that it was indeed -- I ended up changing the order from two to ten shots and we stood by the bar taking them all.

We spent a while at Down The Hatch and while we were there we ate, drank, I almost got into a fight with some douche, drank so more and eventually headed across the street to Karaoke Boho for some awesomely bad karaoke. Since there was a ton of us we decided to get our own room so that we'd only be embarrassing ourselves in front of each other -- Which obviously doesn't matter because we've all seen each other at the best of times and worst of times.

Movie: The Help...

Erin, another one of our friends and I just went to see The Help (2011). I haven't read the book so I can't give you any kind of comparison (Erin did, so I'll have to ask her how it stood up to the book and get back to you), but I really enjoyed the movie for what it was. It was honestly one of the best movies that I've seen in the theater in a while and I'd have no problem recommending it to other people to see.

On a side note, as we walked out of the theater Erin & I noticed that our other friend was in tears -- She actual was annoyed with us for not crying. So be warned, if you're a softy (Which I'm not) you might end up crying.

My Day In Photos...

Here is my day by the hour in photos as promised...

9:00am:
Eating breakfast at my desk because I ended up sleeping in, so I just grabbed whatever was in the fridge and some coffee that my sister had made before she left.

10:00am: Messing around on Twitter in between doing real work.

11:00am: The product of a craft idea that I found while messing around on Pinterest yesterday. Isn't it neat? I loved it so much and now I think crayons are my new favorite crafting item -- Last week it was watercolors.

12:00pm: My lunch, a bacon salad. Erin ended up showing up at the library right before I was about to leave for lunch, so we decided to go out to eat together.

1:00pm: Some books that I had to check to make sure they were processed properly.

2:00pm: My Department Head sent me to the Clerks Office to grab the cart of new books and bring it back to our department.

3:00pm: Finishing up an entry about the new woman "Lori" on the blog.

4:00pm: Pulled this book off of the cart of books that I got from the Clerks Office to read.

5:00pm: Set up for Drawing Club before Lenni had a chance to help.

Between 6:00pm and 7:00pm I was driving all over the place. I picked Justin up and we headed over to one of our friend's houses. Then we all went out to dinner.

7:00pm: We had to wait 20 minutes before we could be seated, so we went for a walk and I just thought this looked neat.

8:00pm: Sushi for dinner.

9:00pm: Dessert after dinner!

10:00pm: A cappuchino that my friend attempted to make me when we got back to his house.

11:00pm: Justin swimming in the pool. Yup, that is all you're gonna get of him.

365 Days Of Pictures: Day 171...

What I Did In Drawing Club...

This is my latest creation during work, I did it during Drawing Club so I guess I was doing my job.

Evaluation Of The New Lady...

As of thus far this is my evaluation of the new lady, whom I shall call "Lori" from hence forward.

She really seem like a normal person and she has a really nice energy to her. I like her a lot, I mean things can change but as of this moment I'm cool with her.

Problem In The Public Restroom...

"Marie" just ran back into the office to let my Department Head and I know that there is an old woman half naked (from the waist down) in the public bathroom washing her underwear in the sink. This is honestly a new one, we've had men pass out drunk with their pants around their ankles but never exposed genital. Thank God that my Department Head is around because I really wouldn't have wanted to deal with this.

World Photography Day...

Yesterday I mentioned World Photography Day, so I thought I'd put an explanation of it up, so that anyone that might be interested in it could get an idea of what it was and how to take part.

About World Photography Day From Its Website:

World Photography Day?
Many people that have mentioned that they’ve never heard of World Photography Day. Why is that? World Photography Day wasn’t ‘created’ by a big brand as a marketing tool. Rather, it’s a day where photographers had started to come together to celebrate photography, just because they could. Any excuse to throw a party right? Slowly, groups around the world have started to get on board with the idea of World Photography Day and you will find traces of World Photography Day being celebrated over the last 20 years or so. Each year, World Photography Day has gained momentum and this year, we’re hoping to bring photographers together once again with an even larger audience.

Why August 19th?

World Photography Day originates from the invention of the Daguerreotype, a photographic processes developed by Louis Daguerre. On January 9, 1839, The French Academy of Sciences announced the daguerreotype process. A few months later, on August 19, 1839, the French government announced the invention as a gift “Free to the World.”
Another photographic processes, the Calotype, was also invented in 1839 by William Fox Talbot (it was announced in 1841). Together, the invention of both the Daguerreotype and Calotype mark 1839 as the year that photography was invented. If you’re interested in learning more about the history of photography, take a look at the following article on Wikipedia: History of Photography

30 Day Photography Challenge List...

Note: Blogger hates me and won't make this bigger without it looking like crap.

August 18, 2011

Interesting Thing On Pinterest...

While I was on Pinterest earlier I found this graphic for a 30 day photography challenge and in its description box the person had written that it would be something awesome to start on World Photography Day which just so happens to be tomorrow -- I had no clue about World Photography Day up until now. And seeing as I love me a 30 day challenge and taking photos I thought that I'd jump on the bandwagon and start this challenge on World Photography Day also -- I actually signed up on the World Photography Day website to post pictures that I take throughout the course of the day. So I'll be incorporating this new challenge in with my 365 day one that I'm doing for my "No Regrets" list.

It's actually really very interesting to me that I found out that tomorrow is World Photography Day because I was reading The Dainty Squid the other day and the chick that runs the blog, Kaylah, had done a photo an hour post (Which you can find here) and I was thinking about doing my own tomorrow. I guess the stars have aligned for my whole photography venture tomorrow. So I'll be posting details about World Photography Day, as well as a bunch of photos tomorrow.

365 Days Of Pictures: Day 170...

Today was "Favorite Page #1's" last day of work for the summer before heading back to college, so we decided to have a crêpe party instead of doing any kind of work.

Bridesmaids Dresses...

After I left work and before I ate the glowing sushi, Erin and I both decided to head over to this big dress store because I had called the night before and they had confirmed that they had a sample of the dress that we are supposed to be wearing in our friends wedding. The dress wasn't the color we needed but it was fine because we were really going there to see how to dress looked in person and see how it would fit. It's a good thing we did this because that sucker ran small. According to the website we are supposed to buy the dresses from Erin's measurements were a size smaller than the sample at the store, but the dress at the store ended up being too tight on her. Now we know that this particular dress runs small and that we should buy a size up even though we are all currently on diets. And we know that our tits will be popping out of this bad boy -- When I saw Erin in the dress all I could think was "Holy titties Batman!"

In addition to going there to see the dress, we also went to check out some shoe options. The bride has specified that she would like us to all be wearing silver high heels that are no larger than three inches. We scoped out the situation and tried on tons of shoes, all while texting the other bridesmaids and the bride, to find the perfect silver shoe to go with the dress. We found a shoe that we could all agree on, but we really need to wait until we have our dresses to see if it really matches well.

FYI - If you were for some reason wondering, the dress is a Mori Lee style number 838.

365 Days Of Pictures: Day 169...

My sushi was glowing! I'm ashamed to admit it, but I actually screamed like I was special about it glowing.

Mysterious New Woman...

Yesterday the replacement person for "Sarah" started, but I didn't get to meet the new woman because I didn't actually come into work until 5:00pm. Unfortunately I will only be getting a glimpse of her today because she is in 5:00pm - 9:00pm and I'll be heading out at 5:00pm sharp (Erin and I found out that one of the local bridal shops has the dress our friend is making us wear at her wedding and we wanna see how it looks, try it on, etc.) that means I'm gonna have to wait until Friday to really get to meet her and see if I like her. My Department Head likes her as of thus far and "Marie" said that she seemed to be a very nice lady. I on the other hand know if I'm going to like someone within five minutes of meeting them, so I'll be letting everyone know how I feel at 1:05pm on Friday.
